Everton fans may have to reconsider the abilities of Marco Silva

Time passes too quickly on the Internet. Just two weeks ago, many Everton fans had all sorts of disrespectful things to say about the notion that Marco Silva would be a great managerial option.

By contrast, many of them were absolutely ready to crown David Unsworth as the future of the managerial position at the club.

Don’t believe me? Take a look at the tweet below. Now, with Watford looming this weekend and the Everton season at absolute rock bottom, many Toffee fans face the unpleasant prospect of having to eat their words.

Just delightful, really.

Who I’m not talking about

Many of us thought that Unsworth would be able to do this job very well until the end of the season, me included. I was wrong about that, but I don’t think those of us who held that position were entirely off base. Unsworth said the right things in press conferences that made you believe he could help this club rally and salvage their season.

The trouble is that his lineups show way too much favoritism to an old guard who are friends with him, and the effort and drive that his team initially showed has died out in a big way. The man is in over his head.

Unsworth is a brilliant developer of young talent, but he simply cannot manage with the big boys at this stage in his career.

Those folks who simply said: “Silva probably isn’t coming right now, let’s stick with Unsy until the end of the year and reconsider our options then” held a valid perspective that simply had a touch too much optimism about our homegrown interim. No real harm there.

The Problem

The problem lies in those fans who have some sort of delusional idea about where Everton is right now as a club, so they resorted to all manner of disrespect.

Barring a completely unexpected turn of fortune this weekend, those folks will have to eat a good deal of crow because Unsworth has shown nothing to suggest he can match wits with Silva in the Premier League.

Honestly, Marco Silva is too good to be managing Everton right now, and that’s a shame.

He’s got Watford eighth in the table, within striking distance of European spots, and at only forty years old has already been touted as the man to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal. As things stand now, Silva is on his way to one of Europe’s truly huge jobs.

Everton, frankly, are a less attractive bridge to one of those jobs right now than Watford is, and that should be a jarring reminder to portions of our fanbase of exactly where the club is and how far it needs to climb from the current state.

The Point

Why bring this up at all? Well, it’s really quite simple. If the club is going to improve, it needs its fanbase behind good decision making.

Segments of the fanbase shooting off at the mouth, deriding what would be great opportunities for Everton is only going to contribute to a fractured base of support for the players going forward.

A strong dose of humility will greatly impact our attitude toward the person who is brought in during the next few weeks to replace Unsworth, and the attitude that man is met with will affect his ability to steer our club to safety..

It’s time for this fanbase to wake up to Everton’s situation. Stop trying to undermine Steve Walsh, stop trying to hang on to delusional ideas like Unsworth becoming some sort of savant or that the Blues are too good for a manager like Marco Silva.

Brace yourself for a long, tough road and drop the act of the high and mighty. Hopefully Everton win this weekend. It’s desperately needed. I just don’t see how it’s going to get that done given the current state.
