Harry Kane gave Tottenham north London bragging rights with a second-half winner against Arsenal at Wembley.

The England striker headed home from Ben Davies' cross from the left flank to net what was the only goal of the game.

He had chances to add to his tally as Spurs pressed for a second but Alexandre Lacazette missed a gilt-edged chance to steal a point for the Gunners in stoppage time.

Here's how the action unfolded...

Spurs: Lloris, Trippier, Sanchez, Vertonghen Davies, Dier, Dembele, Alli, Eriksen, Kane, Son.

Subs: Rose, Lamela, Wanyama, Vorm, Sissoko, Aurier, Lucas Moura.

Arsenal: Cech, Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal, Elneny Xhaka, Ozil, Wilshere, Mkhitaryan, Aubameyang.

Subs: Lacazette Ospina, Iwobi, Chambers, Welbeck, Maitland-Niles, Kolasinac.

Wenger: Kane made the difference

Arsene Wenger has been speaking after the game...

In the first half we missed three or four opportunities on the counter attack which is difficult to swallow, always the final ball. We contained them to very little.

Once they scored you could see we were wobbling and they could have scored more but in the last 10 minutes we should have come back to 1-1.

The first goal was key and we conceded it. Kane made the difference, that’s what he’s about. I have seen the replay, it is no foul, just good centre-forward play. We can only look at ourselves.

It will be more difficult to finish in the top four but we have to fight for it.

Pochettino speaks

The Spurs manager has spoken to the BBC.

“First half both teams had good energy but they were so compact it was hard to find the space. We dominated but we did not create much.

“Second half with the same shape we were much better. We found space and created problems and after 20 minutes it should be 3-0. In football if you don’t kill the game you will concede chances and suffer.

“I am so happy to win. We have had three massive games against United, Liverpool and Arsenal and seven points is good.

“Harry Kane is not old fashioned, he is the present and the future. We are so proud that he is in our side.”

Dier: It should have been more

Eric Dier has been speaking to the BBC.

We dominated the game and second half we countered really well, created lots of chances. It’s disappointing that we struggled in the last five minutes as the game should have been settled.

This team has created the mentality where we can dig in if we have to. They had chances at the end but it could have been a much bigger win.

Harry Kane loves scoring against Arsenal. He should have had a few more as well.

Player ratings

Harry Kane was the North London derby hero again as Tottenham went seven clear of Arsenal.

The two sides played out an even first half but Spurs were dominant after the break and should have won by a greater margin.

Kane, who scored his 100th Premier League goal last week, delivered the key moment with a thumping header from Ben Davies’ cross.

It was a different story for Arsenal’s attacking players, with new boys Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan struggling.

Seven talking points

Harry Kane maintained his remarkable record in North London derbies as Tottenham delivered a huge blow to Arsenal’s top four hopes.

Kane headed the second-half winner as Tottenham reigned supreme at Wembley with the Tottenham striker’s seventh goal in his last eight North London derbies.

It was a huge boost for Tottenham’s top four chances but now leaves Arsenal seven points behind their North London rivals and in serious danger of missing out on the Champions League for a second year in a row.

Arsenal keeper Petr Cech also made a string of brilliant second half saves to stop Tottenham winning more comfortably.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men were far superior to Arsenal as Tottenham now look top dogs in North London.

Wenger pays Aubameyang unbelievable compliment

Arsene Wenger has paid Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang the ultimate compliment by likening him to Thierry Henry.

Wenger admits he was secretly pleased when Aubameyang admitted he modelled himself on the Arsenal legend - and firmly believes he can live up to such high standards.

Gunners boss Wenger said: “I would say (he is most like) Thierry Henry with his quality of runs. But it’s a bit too early to compare him to the best player ever who played here!

“It is an ambitious statement but it is a good one, the best goalscorer ever in Arsenal’s history, so it doesn’t mean he will score as many goals but why not?

“He has played one game. But it’s a good example to follow. His finish for his first goal against Everton was brilliant.”

Vertonghen explains Arsenal snub

Jan Vertonghen could have joined Arsenal or Tottenham - and insists what is happening now proves he made the right choice.

Vertonghen had offers from both North London clubs when he left Ajax in 2012 and he believes there has been the start of a power shift in Tottenham’s favour which will lead to a new era of success.

Tottenham defender Vertonghen, 30, said: “It was as close as it can get. My agent went to Arsenal, I wasn’t there myself but it was very respectful and in the end I had to make a choice and I chose Spurs.

“I chose Spurs and I think it’s turned out well. I felt I was joining a great team, with great plans and the personal chats I had with people at Spurs were great and I followed my instinct, my gut feeling and that’s it.

“I don’t want to say it on the basis of one season, maybe two seasons, but the last three - including this one - we’ve done very well, we’re building a great team with the manager and the new stadium is coming up.”

Pochettino fires Kane-sized warning shot to Arsenal

Mauricio Pochettino sends Harry Kane into derby day battle against Arsenal today warning: He scores where he wants.

The dual Golden Boot Winner takes on the Gunners’ new £65million goal machine, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gabon hitman has been hailed for his consistency in France with St Etienne and Germany with Dortmund.

But Pochettino believes Kane would rip up the record books in whatever league he plays.

The Spurs boss said: “People in Spain say Spain is the best League, the same in Italy.

“But come on, I played in France, I managed in Spain. I watch football in Germany. People keep their eyes on England, the best league is here.

“To have the impact Harry has had is so difficult and that is why for me he is one of the greatest strikers.”

“I know that a striker like him in England, in Germany, in Spain. He is top. People say if Messi moved to England would he be the same?

“It’s like Maradonna, if he played today would he be the same? The same with Di Stefano, Cruyff, Pele.”

6 things we noticed from Arsenal training

Arsenal face Spurs on Saturday in what will be something of a showpiece North London Derby at Wembley.

Both sides currently sit outside the top four with their Champions League places hanging in the balance.

Arsene Wenger’s men will still be on a high from their thrilling 5-1 win over Everton, which saw a debut goal from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and three assists from Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Spurs got over that crazy 10 minutes against Liverpool by beating Newport in the FA Cup on Wednesday. Here’s what they got up to in training.

As for Arsenal, here’s what we noticed.
