Steven Gerrard has seen Nemanja Matic play one game for Manchester United, and decided that he wishes he was wearing a Liverpool shirt instead.

The Reds legend - speaking on BT Sport's coverage of Liverpool's 2-1 Champions League playoff victory over Hoffenheim - identified the former Chelsea man as the type of player that his former club are missing.

Matic moved from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford for £40million this summer, but Gerrard wishes it was the Anfield stage he was gracing.

When asked by Gary Lineker which United player he coveted for the Reds, he said: "Looking at them at the weekend… Matic. He’s a very good player.

"We haven’t got a natural, sitting holding midfielder at the moment.

"Jordan Henderson has done a fantastic job in there at times last season, obviously struggled with injury at times, and we’ve got Emre Can as well but for me they are suited as well to be No. 8s that can get into the box."

"I think that all those players – [Georginio] Wijnaldum, Henderson and Can – would all benefit from having a real big monster of a central midfielder in there who can break up play and help Liverpool be a bit more secure when they pile so many numbers forward.

"Obviously I don’t want to create any headlines and stuff [ed - sorry, Stevie], but I am a huge fan of Matic. Looking at this weekend, I think he’s the right piece of the jigsaw that Jose [Mourinho] needs."

Why didn't he tell Jurgen Klopp that before he went?!
