Everton have stepped up their pursuit of Memphis Depay follow Yannick Bolasie's season-ending injury, according to a report in The Sun.

Toffees winger Bolasie suffered serious knee ligament damage in the draw with Manchester United on Sunday and could be sidelined for a year.

Depay would be a natural replacement for Bolasie on Everton's left flank.

The Dutchman, 22, has disappointed massively since his £25million transfer from PSV Eindhoven 18 months ago and is the only member of United's senior squad to have started just one game this season.

Zorya 0-2 United: 5 things we learned

Manchester United booked their place in the Europa League last 32 with a 2-0 win over Zorya Luhansk, writes Hamish Mackay.

There had been fears the game would be called off due to the partially frozen pitch in Ukraine. While it eventually went ahead, the quality of the surface certainly seemed to impact the play, with United labouring their way through long periods.

It took a moment of individual quality from United's phoenix to break the deadlock. Henrikh Mkhitaryan has risen from the flames of Old Trafford obscurity to force his way into this team, and he scored his first goal for the club on Thursday night.

He picked up the ball on the half way line, dribbled past two defenders and slid the ball under the onrushing Igor Levchenko.

Jose Mourinho's side have struggled to hold on to 1-0 leads in recent months but managed it in Odessa. Like so many of their performances, there was a late goal, but this time it was in the right net. Zlatan Ibrahimovic broke through Zorya's back line and finished easily when through one-on-one.

Fenerbahce beat Feyenoord 1-0 in the other Group A game to leave United in second, but they nonetheless head back to Manchester knowing their European campaign will live on in 2017.

Here are five talking points from the game...

Mkhitaryan: There's more to come from me

Henrikh Mkhitaryan revealed his relief after scoring his first Manchester United goal to book their place in the Europa League knockout stage, writes David McDonnell.

Mkhitaryan's solo wonder goal gave Jose Mourinho's side the platform for victory, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic sealing the win with a second strike two minutes from time.

It means Mourinho's men – who are now unbeaten in seven games – are in Monday's knockout draw, with Mkhitaryan emerging as the hero after a difficult start to his United career.

He was frozen out by Mourinho after a nightmare first start and had to be patient to win back his place, with the £26.3million summer signing admitting his first goal is a weight off his mind.

Mkhitaryan said: “I think the first goal can be weight off your shoulders.

“I've waited a long time for this goal and my next one has to be at Old Trafford - I want to score at home."

Lukaku reveals Pogba delight at United return

Paul Pogba was overcome with emotion as he signed the deal that made him the most expensive player in history and saw him return to Manchester United from Juventus, according to his good friend Romelu Lukaku.

The midfielder put pen to paper on an £89million deal to rejoin his former team-mates in Manchester this summer, having left for the sunny climes of Turin in Italy four years ago, writes Arash Hekmat.

And his return was an emotional affair according to the French international's pal Lukaku, who was present as the 23-year-old signed the contract.

Speaking with Belgium's Sport/Foot magazine, the Everton striker said: "A lot of things are said about him, but I was there at the hotel when he signed for United.

"There were maybe ten people surrounding him with briefcases and contracts inside.

"When everything was signed - and I've known Paul for many years - I've never seen him with that look on his face. I'd never seen him so happy. This return to United, it had nothing to do with money."

Rashford wants central striker role

Marcus Rashford hopes his time on the flank will help his development as a striker, writes Jake Murtagh.

The Manchester United youngster burst onto the scene last season, scoring four goals in his first two matches, with his exploits earning him a place in England's squad for the European Championships.

However, Rashford has been utilised in a wider role since Jose Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford this summer, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been used through the middle instead.

The 19-year-old insists his long-term goal is to operate down the centre, but believes his spell on the flanks can help.

He told Sky Sports: "Playing out wide is going to help me to develop to play in the middle in the long run. Looking at the game from a different perspective, it's helping my game a lot.

"When I do get a chance to go in the middle, I find things more natural now. I do think it's helping my game.

"When I've been playing as a winger, there are positions you can put the ball into for the striker and when I go back into the middle I understand those positions more than I did."
