Manchester United will reportedly attempt to sell Matteo Darmian in January because of the faith they have in youngster Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

The 18-year-old Dutchman Fosu-Mensah penned a new four-year contract at Old Trafford earlier this week.

And The Times say United believe he has the potential to eventually replace Antonio Valencia as the club's first-choice right-back.

That could spell bad news for Darmian, who made only his second appearance of the season in the Europa League win over Fenerbahce on Thursday night.

Wayne Rooney, who has been United's first choice from 12 yards over the years, started the match but did not step up to take either kick during the first half.

The skipper spoke with Pogba before the Frenchman stepped up to score his second goal since returning to Old Trafford after Juan Mata was fouled in the box.

A second penalty came just minutes later when Martial was bundled over, and the striker dusted himself down to convert the spot kick himself.

Mourinho told BT Sport: "The first penalty taker was Paul - we made the decision.

"He didn't want to repeat because it's a second penalty a couple of minutes later. Probably because Martial won it and he's a good penalty taker.

"It's not a problem for me. I always give indication of the one that has the responsibility [Pogba] but leave freedom for the players on the pitch [to make the decision]."
