Craig Shakespeare has admitted he cannot confirm Riyad Mahrez will be a Leicester player beyond this summer.

Roma have indicated they are prepared to pay £20million for the 26-year-old winger but Leicester have made it clear to the Italian giants that the offer falls way below their £50million valuation.

Asked whether he will succeed with his bid to keen Mahrez at the club, Shakespeare said: “I’m not sure. I’m not sure.”

Mahrez, the PFA Player of the Year two seasons ago, has already told the club that he wants to leave to play in the Champions League. Shakespeare has called on the Algerian to remain professional while his future is being sorted out.

The Leicester boss added: “I think Riyad stated his position really clearly. Mine is really simple.

“While he’s here and while we’ve had no bids officially – its all speculation - he has to be committed to the Football Club.

“I have to say in his two weeks back he has been totally committed and he’s trained really well.

“Outgoings are inevitable at any football club but until you actually get bids for your players there is no decision to make.”

Mahrez, scored 10 goals and made seven assists last season after scoring 17 and making a further 10 in Leicester’s sensational title-winning campaign two seasons ago.

Shakespeare went on: “We want him to stay. I would like him to stay, as manager. As I say he has stated his case clearly but while he is here I need that full commitment.”

Shakespeare refused to comment on an approach from Leicester for Swansea’s £50million-rated midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson.

He said: “I think he’s a good player but it’s pure speculation in terms of transfer targets. I won’t be speculating on it.”

But the Foxes are close to landing keeper Eldin Jakupovic from Hull.

The 32-year-old is expected to jet out here to Hong Kong to join his new team-mates once a medical is completed.

Shakespeare said: “I would like to bring more in but we all know in today’s transfer market the complications involved and the long process it can be. Although you’d like to can never be too certain until they come into the building.”
