Alexis Sanchez was forced to stay at Arsenal after a transfer deadline day shambles.

Manchester City failed with a last gasp £60m bid and Sanchez will now leave for free next summer after making it clear he wanted to move to the Etihad.

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey then took a dig at the club’s decision to sell “another of our British boys” after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s £40m move to Liverpool.

Ramsey was also forced to explain a post on social media in which he wrote “shambles” was a personal joke rather than a dig at Arsenal.

That came on top of a frantic round of last gasp negotiations which saw Arsenal make a £90m bid for Monaco’s Thomas Lemar but it fell down because they ran out of time. They also tried for Paris Saint Germain’s Julian Draxler.

Arsenal were knocked back and then told City the whole deal was off because it was too late and it had left them with no time to find a top class replacement.

City were left annoyed and frustrated with Arsenal for not getting anyone lined up despite indicating they were willing to sell.

But Arsenal see it as a clear message of intent that they did not want to cash in on their best player but fans were left angry that they did not do more business.

Gunners legend Ian Wright tweeted: “It's bad business to let Sanchez walk out next year for free.Take the F*****g money! He doesn't want to be there! We're Arsenal so some pride.”

Sanchez had even told his team mates in Chile that he was going to join City - but then saw the move fall though.

Mirror Sport revealed in July that Sanchez is demanding £400,000-a-week to stay and Arsenal are resigned to losing him for free next year.

They did at least get players out as they loaned Lucas Perez to Deportivo La Coruna and Joel Campbell to Real Betis.

Following the deadline day debacle, Sanchez's Chile were beaten 3-0 by Paraguay to leave their World Cup qualifying campaign in the balance.
