Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain admits fans are surprised by his decision to quit Arsenal to join Liverpool.

Oxlade-Chamberlain turned down more money at Arsenal - as well as snubbing a bigger offer from Chelsea - to sign for Jurgen Klopp.

The England winger completed his transfer yesterday for an initial £35million with £5million in add-ons and knows some supporters will find the move strange.

But Oxlade-Chamberlain is adamant he has made the correct decision after being part of the Arsenal side hammered 4-0 by Liverpool on Sunday.

“After six years, three FA Cup wins and countless incredible memories, the time has come for me to move on from Arsenal,” he said on social media in which he thanked Arsene Wenger and the Gunners.

“I know my choice might come as a surprise to many, and the decision to leave was tough after being a part of the club for so many years, but I feel that this move is right for the next stage in my on-going development."

Oxlade-Chamberlain, 24, who has signed a five-year deal worth £120,000-a-week at Anfield, quit the Emirates because he was unhappy being played out of position at wing-back.

He wants to play midfield and could struggle to win a place there for Liverpool, although Klopp sidestepped the issue.

“I hear a lot of talk about positions, but let’s talk about the player; he is someone with really good abilities, who always gives everything for his team,” said the Liverpool boss.

“A player that is positive and willing to take risks to try and make positive things happen.

“He may still be young, but he has a lot of experience in the Premier League, Champions League and for his country.

"Already he is a very, very good player and I think he has the mentality and desire to get even better - and that excites me.”

Klopp revealed he has tracked Oxlade-Chamberlain since he played against his Borussia Dortmund team in the Champions League in 2014.

“I remember the first time I saw him play live - it was at Dortmund in 2014 and he came on as a sub that day and made a big impact,” said the German.

“He stood out immediately because of his pace and skills and his attitude in such a big game for a young player.

“Since then I have followed him and when I heard it may be possible to sign him, I didn't need to think twice.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain signed on as Divock Origi left Anfield to join Wolfsburg for the rest of the season for a loan fee of £6million.

Wolfsburg will cover Origi’s wages and Klopp insists the Belgium hitman, who has been pushed down the strikers’ pecking order by Dominic Solanke,

still has a future at Anfield.
