Manchester City just keep going. And going, and going, and going.

Wednesday night's 1-0 success for Pep Guardiola's men at Newcastle made it 18 Premier League wins on the bounce, 19 from their 20 matches this season and 58 points from a possible 60.

The numbers really are staggering, and mark this City team out as surely the best and most dominant we've seen over one particular season in the Premier League era.

But when can that incredible domination become official with the lifting of the trophy?

We've been crunching the numbers to look at just when we can remove the word elect from the term champions-elect, and crown this City team with the title they deserve.

And Manchester United fans might want to look away now...

What's earliest they could confirm a finish above United?

But first, pure fantasy.

This won't happen, but IF City were to continue their winning run and rivals United - their closest challengers in the league, a massive 15 points behind - suddenly started losing every game, then City could ensure that they finish above their neighbours when they entertain Leicester at home on February 10 .

That is in just seven league matches' time, but the chances of both City winning all of those seven and United losing their seven are incredibly remote, and of course it wouldn't secure the league because other teams would have picked up points.

Still, City fans can dream.

What happens if everything stays the same?

Now, the more likely stuff.

With United averaging 2.15 points per game this season (43 from 20 matches), they are currently on course the finish the season on 82 points.

Should City stay at their incredible average of 2.9 points per game (58 from 20) then they would surpass 82 points at home to Chelsea on the weekend of March 3 , in nine matches' time.

City would only win the league on that date if United's form had stayed the same though. If United happen to win their nine matches up to that point and City's form stayed the same, United would have only narrowed the gap by one point.

What if they dropped down to United's level?

With fixtures away at Liverpool and Tottenham and at home to Chelsea to come, surely, SURELY, you'd think that Manchester City will drop points sooner rather than later?!

But then even if they do, and go along at United's hardly shabby 2.15 points per game ratio for a bit, they'll still win the league with room to spare.

At that rate they'd pass United's hypothetical 82 points away at Everton on the weekend of March 31 , with six games of the season remaining.

The current record for the earliest Premier League win is Manchester United in 2000/01, when they won it with five games to spare.

What if the 15 point gap was maintained?

Now here's the one City fans will want.

Because if both they and United keep pace with each other over the next 12 matches - keeping the 15 point gap between them intact - then City would secure the title with a win or a draw in the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium on the weekend of April 7 .

Trophy parade anyone?

Could they actually not win it?

In a word, no.

United would surely need to win every game between now and the end of the season to deprive City of the title, meaning that they'd finish on 97 points.

Given their excellent goal difference, City would therefore need to end on 96 points to be runners-up.

That means that they'd pick up just 38 points from their remaining 18 matches - just over 2.1 points per game.

This means that theoretically they could afford to lose five times between now and the end of the season and they'd still be champions.

Just give them the the trophy now.
