Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger claimed West Ham's hat-trick hero Andy Carroll was lucky to stay on the pitch during Saturday's 3-3 draw.

The Gunners went ahead thanks to goals from Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez but Carroll terrorised the visitors with a hat-trick in a thrilling 3-3 draw .

The visiting defence had no answer to the sheer physicality of Carroll as the former Liverpool man scored three times either side of half-time.

However, Carroll was involved in a challenge with defender Laurent Koscielny and was booked inside the first five minutes, and Wenger believes that the Hammers hitman was fortunate to stay on.

"Was Carroll lucky to stay on? Yes, of course," said Wenger after the game.

"He was lucky to finish the game, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have to concede goals with headers.

"But overall I believe that he was lucky. I didn't expect him to start, he has not played for the last five games.

"It's difficult to go into any assessment of performances. I don't believe that Koscielny was at fault for the goals."

The draw leaves the Gunners 10 points behind leaders Leicester who travel to Sunderland on Sunday.
