Manchester City increased their Premier League lead to a formidable eight points after victory over Arsenal, coupled with Manchester United's defeat at Chelsea.

City secured a 3-1 home win over the Gunners — who lost for the fourth time this season — with Kevin De Bruyne kicking things off with City's 50th goal of the campaign. Sergio Aguero, freshly minted as the club's record goalscorer, added a penalty before second-half efforts by substitutes from each side, Alexandre Lacazette and Gabriel Jesus.

That brings Pep Guardiola's side to 31 points from a possible 33, with United leaving Stamford Bridge with nothing just a couple of hours later.

Alvaro Morata scored the only goal of the game with a brilliant header in the 55th minute. Blues boss Antonio Conte got the better of United manager Jose Mourinho twice last season at his old stomping ground and made it a hat-trick here.

Son Heung-min spared Tottenham's blushes as his second-half winner sealed a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace. Wilfried Zaha spurned a golden chance to give the Eagles the lead and it proved a costly miss as Son's fourth goal of the season sealed victory for Mauricio Pochettino's side, who sit level with United on 23 points.

At Goodison Park, Everton held on for a nail-biting 3-2 win over Watford in what could be caretaker manager David Unsworth's final game in charge.

The Hornets had taken a 2-0 lead through Richarlison and Christian Kabasele but the Toffees showed some much-needed fight to turn the tables. Oumar Niasse and Dominic Calvert-Lewin levelled matters before two penalties settled the game in Everton's favour. Leighton Baines scored his to put the home side in front and Tom Cleverley missed against his former club in tense finale.

In Saturday's matches, Mohamed Salah fired Liverpool to victory with a fine goal brace in the Reds' 4-1 Premier League win at West Ham.

Elsewhere, Sam Vokes headed Burnley to a short-lived stay in sixth place as the Clarets edged home 1-0 at Southampton.

Glenn Murray claimed his fourth goal in three Premier League games to hand Brighton a 1-0 win at Swansea. The former Crystal Palace striker bundled the ball home with his thigh in an untidy but pivotal finish for Chris Hughton's Seagulls.

Rajiv van La Parra, meanwhile, curled home a fine strike for his maiden Premier League goal as 10-man Huddersfield held on for a 1-0 home win over West Brom.

So, who makes the Mirror Football team of the weekend?

GK: Paulo Gazzaniga (Tottenham)

Gazzaniga only found out he was playing on Saturday night when it emerged Michel Vorm, who was set to stand in for the injured Hugo Lloris, had picked up an injury of his own.

The Argentine keeper had one nervy moment when he was slow to rush off his line but ultimately pulled off a string of brilliant saves in the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

RB: Steve Cook (Bournemouth)

Defenders were largely on top at St James' Park and it was goalless heading into injury time. But Cook, who had performed well at the back for the Cherries, won it late on.

The right-back rose above Ayoze Perez, headed past Rob Elliot and claimed all three points for Eddie Howe.

LB: Leighton Baines (Everton)

This was far from a vintage performance by Everton but you could not fault their effort. They looked dead and buried at 2-0 down yet somehow finished the game with all three points.

Baines got an assist as the Toffees drew level and then kept his cool t tuck away the winner from the penalty spot.

CB: Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea)

When Antonio Conte needed his senior player most, they stepped up to the plate.

Against the second highest scoring team in the Premier League, Azpilicueta helped Chelsea keep a clean sheet and even chipped in with an assist, playing a delightful through-ball/cross for Morata's header

Conte's decision to drop David Luiz meant all eyes were on Christensen, who stepped into his shoes.

The 21-year-old Dane repayed the faith shown in him, ensuring Lukaku's dry spell continued as the Blue kept a clean sheet.

DM: N'Golo Kante (Chelsea)

Kante has been badly missed by Chelsea and it is no surprise his return coincided with their biggest win of the season.

The whole Chelsea team played their part in keeping a clean sheet but Kante's tireless performance in midfield was key to breaking the link from United's midfield to attack.

CM: Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

De Bruyne, making his case as the Premier League's best player, opened the scoring against Arsenal with a brilliant low shot into Petr Cech's far corner.

But it is De Bruyne's all-round play that makes him so impresive. His movement and link up play is second to none and it is hard to think of a better passer in English football right now.

CM: David Silva (Manchester City)

It is testament to the quality of Silva that he has kept his place in this City side despite numerous high profile, big money signings.

Even as he nears his 32nd birthday, Silva continues to stand out in the best attacking team in English football and laid on yet another assist in the win against Arsenal.

RW: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

Jamie Carragher described Salah as the signing of the summer last week and on Saturday's performance it is easy to see why.

The Egyptian is lethal on the counter attack and scored twice in the rout of West Ham. He now has 13 goals in 19 appearances this season.

LW: Demarai Gray (Leicester)

Gray was handed a new four-year deal last week and his performance against Stoke showed why. He didn't get his name on the scoresheet or score a goal but his all-round play was very impressive and his crossing was a constant threat against Stoke.

Tottenham and Liverpool were both keen on him over the summer and he will certainly attract more attention at the end of the season.

ST: Oumar Niasse (Everton)

If fans are looking for refined performances they won't find them from Niasse, but if they want guts, energy and persistence then they will find it in abundance.

His energy and pressing was a key component in Everton's comeback against Watford and he got the goal that began the revival.
