Jose Mourinho believes Wayne Rooney will return to Old Trafford in the future after the Manchester United legend's first game against the Red Devils since returning to Everton over the summer.

Rooney had two clear sights of goal but failed to find the back of the net as United beat the Toffees 4-0 at the Theatre of Dreams on Sunday.

The 31-year-old was given a warm ovation as he was substituted in the second half, and Mourinho wasn't surprised by the reception the club's record scorer received.

“It’s the nature of English fans, it's the nature of big clubs when the player is big in the club and is an important part of the club history,” the Special One said.

“Every club in England does that. I can only speak by Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford but in both stadiums when we got former important players the reception is normally phenomenal. No surprise at all.

“He’s at home and I believe that one day he will be back home."

Mourinho was impressed with what he saw from his side, who found the net through Antonio Valencia, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial.

"I think the performance was very good, especially in the first 30-35 minutes, it was probably our best performance of the season," he added.
