A Middlesbrough fan has hailed Liverpool and their fans following Sunday's clash at Anfield.

The Reds secured their return to the Champions League after a 3-0 win over already-relegated Boro.

Jeff Marchant attended the clash with his daughter and despite the defeat, it was an experience he will never forget.

He penned a letter to the Liverpool Echo to praise the city, the stadium and the Reds supporters.

In his letter he put: “Good Afternoon, My name is Jeff Marchant and I am a Boro supporter who attended Anfield yesterday for the first time with my daughter Emily.

“I feel compelled to write to you and hopefully you can forward this message to ALL Liverpool supporters and ALL staff of Liverpool FC by way of publishing this in your paper.

“Upon arriving in Liverpool yesterday and wondering what to expect by way of a reception I can only say how welcome we were made to feel.

"The supporters in The Arkles pub were so friendly and made us feel at ease. Upon entering Anfield I have never met such polite and friendly staff as those of LFC. Granted the the game didn't go as we would of hoped but it went as we expected.

“The banter between the two sets of supporters was brilliant and for the Liverpool supporters to applaud us the way they did as we left the ground really was something special and something that will live with me for a very long time. Not once did we feel threatened in any way shape or form.

"This is the reason that Liverpool FC is my second team. Once again thank you for a truly memorable day out. We hope to see you again very soon.

Kind regards, Jeff and Emily Marchant."
