Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has revealed the extent of the sickening abuse he has received on social media.

The Croatian has endured a difficult start to the season at Anfield and put in a poor display in the recent defeat to Tottenham.

He looked set to feature against Huddersfield but dropped out in the warm-up with Lovren previously revealing he had required up to five painkillers to get through matches.

Lovren took to social media on Tuesday to show the vile threats he has received from a user, appearing to be a Liverpool fan.

The message sent to his Instagram read: "I'm gonna murder ur family u Croatian p****".

Lovren, who has two young children, Elene and Josip with wife Anita, responded: "I don't mind when people talk s*** about me, its says more about them!

"But I can not ignore when my family is threatened. I just can't and won't accept that. Disgusting."

Jurgen Klopp discussed the defender's absence following the win over Huddersfield.

"Joel [Matip] and Dejan were exchanging passes and then in the last one, he felt something in the muscle.

Liverpool are back in action against Maribor in the Champions League on Wednesday although it is unclear if Lovren will feature.
