David Beckham was in the stands to watch his two former sides clash at the StubHub Center in Los Angeles.

Manchester United - Beckham's first team - took on LA Galaxy - one of Beckham's last teams - in the first friendly of the Red Devils' pre-season tour of America.

United ran out comfortable winners, coasting to a 5-2 win. Marcus Rashford was the star of the show, scoring twice, but the big news of the night was the first appearance of £75million man Romeu Lukaku in a Manchester United shirt.

Beckham was no doubt impressed as he watched on from the crowd - although he appeared to be wary of showing too much support for his beloved United in front of the LA Galaxy supporters.

He did, however, get a massive cheer when his face appeared on the big screen during the first half, as United fans realised their hero was in the ground.

Watching his former team play against MLS opposition must have had Beckham hoping that he can finally get his proposed Miami franchise off the ground.

Last month, he has scored a major breakthrough in his beleaguered Miami football club dream.

The sporting legend has won the backing of a powerful local politician to buy the final piece of land needed to build his futuristic stadium.

This clears the way for Becks to snap up the three-acre plot for £7million – the final part of the jigsaw to complete the planned nine-acre site.

He already has six adjoining acres he bought privately last year for £14.7million.

Becks, 42, wants to create his Major League Soccer franchise in the Overtown section of the city.

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Audrey Edmonson, who represents the area, had originally stalled his bid to buy a three-acre truck depot formerly operated by the county’s water and sewage department.

But now she has agreed to back the purchase, allowing the county – which covers Miami– to sell it to him in a no-bids deal if other commissioners agree at a meeting this week.

Commissioners – or councillors – in Miami-Dade do not usually block recommendations from colleagues backing deals on their own patch.

Becks still needs the city council to approve building the 25,000-seater stadium. But the latest move is seen as a massive boost to the icon’s Miami MLS dream, announced amid fanfare in 2014.

The Miami Beckham United group – which includes Pop Idol creator Simon Fuller, 57 – has faced hostility and setbacks in its bid to bring Major League Soccer to the city.

It had two years of failed attempts to build a stadium in three other locations.

When it bought the six acres in Overtown last year one of Becks’ partners in the venture, Marcelo Claure, said: ‘We have the right site, the right ownership group and a loyal base of fans counting down the days to the first match.’
