Arsenal-mad Jeremy Corbyn has backed under-fire boss Arsene Wenger to stay in charge for as long as he wants.

And the veteran Labour leader begged those Gooners campaigning to oust their long-serving manager to consider his immense record on qualifying for the Champions League.

Wenger is on track to qualify for an extraordinary 19th consecutive season in the continent's premier competition – a record bettered only by Spanish giant Real Madrid.

Yet increasing numbers of fans want him out over his failure to deliver a single league title in the past 12 years.

“I'm a Wenger man,” Mr Corbyn said.

“I like Arsene Wenger, I think he's an amazing manager, a very intelligent man.

“I say to people that feel disappointed in Arsene – he has ensured Arsenal have been in the Champion's League for 20 years. No other club in Europe (other than Madrid) has managed that.

“Of the 92 clubs in the league, pretty well 85 would give their eye teeth to achieve what Arsene Wenger has achieved.”

As the MP for Islington North Mr Corbyn is Arsenal's local MP has he has met the boss numerous times.

“I've had many conversations with him and I love talking to him. He's very thoughtful,” Mr Corbyn said.

“I remember him talking to a group of primary school kids from my constituency when they had a 'language day' at the Emirates Stadium and Arsene Wenger came and talked to them. I liked his approach.”

Asked if he was sorry to see a veteran leader under fire from his own supporters, Mr Corbyn said: “Yes. I think Arsene should go when he wants to go. And we support him.”
