Arsene Wenger has shut the door on any speculation that he might finally take the England manager's job , while leaving the window slightly ajar.

After Arsenal's impressive 2-0 victory against Basel in the Champions League, the Gunners boss - this week celebrating 20 years in charge of the North London club - was asked once again about the England job.

Wenger fits the profile that the FA are looking for - a manager with Premier League experience and an understanding of the English game, but not necessarily English - perhaps better than anyone else.

But when asked about the prospect, he was reported by the BBC as saying: "I am focused 100% on Arsenal and my priority will always be to this club. Nothing will change on that."

The Gunners boss said he was flattered to be linked with the England top job, but said that he is not going anywhere - this season at least.

The best bit of his conference? When he was asked if he knew the words to 'God Save the Queen', the England national anthem, he stated simply: "Yes, I know."

ITV pundit Lee Dixon, who knows Wenger well from his time at Arsenal, isn't sure it's his time.

“If he wants to go into that aside of football - whenever he’s spoke about it to me he’s said international football is not for him right now," he said.

"He’s at the end of his contract and if he wins something for Arsenal or he doesn’t then it will come to a head one way or the other.

“Would he then fancy backing down a little bit? Knowing him he likes to be involved in the day-to-day basis of the game. Whether international football fits that bill I’m not sure.”
