Arsene Wenger insisted Aaron Ramsey did not dive to win Arsenal ’s last gasp penalty and claimed he has been left with a neck injury.

Burnley fans were furious and jeered Arsenal off the pitch as they screamed “cheat” after Ramsey went down under James Tarkowski’s challenge and Alexis Sanchez struck a 92nd minute penalty.

Wenger also claimed Arsenal should have had another penalty for Robbie Brady’s challenge on Hector Bellerin.

But Wenger insisted: “It looked a clear penalty, I’d have to watch again. But there was one on Bellerin as well, I can understand why they (Burnley) were disappointed but from outside it looked a penalty.

"When you speak to him, he didn't throw himself on the ground, he wanted to go back and flick the ball, he was pushed in the back, had a problem in the neck from the push, it was a very strong push, he said.”

Wenger praised his players and their performance on a freezing and windy afternoon at Burnley as they moved back into the top four places even after Mesut Ozil went home ill before the game.

Wenger said: “We kept a clean sheet when burnley were really up for it. we won 1-0 but have to congratulated our 3 centre backs because they did a remarkable job.

“I believe in the first half it was very even, they were sharper than us, it took a while to get the pace, they were more decisive. But second half it was all us. They made some changes but we pushed ourselves higher up.

"They defended very well, well organised, clever intelligent and direct, when you play them you understand why they have 22 points.

“I pushed Sanchez more in the middle in the second half, he was much more influential, I felt in the first half it was like the team didn't get it into enough it enough but second half much better, more dangerous, you could see through him danger could be created.”

Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny said: “You are always happy because you score a late goal and have three points.

"It was a difficult game you know, they play very direct, cross very well and upfront they have players who can score headers. We knew it was a difficult game so that is why we are very happy. Burnley played well in the first half and put pressure on us.

"I think it was very important (to win after rivals had dropped points) more than the Tottenham game. It was crucial to win here.”
