Liverpool new-boy Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has revealed he modelled his game on Anfield legend Steven Gerrard .

The midfielder joined the club from Arsenal on deadline day and will make his debut against Manchester City today.

And the 24-year-old hopes to fill the boots of his predecessor.

"When I really started to take a massive interest in football, I was playing centre mid and was told to learn from people in my position at the top of the game, so Stevie was the one I used to watch," Oxlade-Chamberlain told The Times.

"I love to run with the ball as well. Over the years I’d see him making long, marauding runs through the middle, long strides bursting into the box, getting shots in, scoring amazing goals.

"Stevie was one of the most exciting players to watch, attacking-wise, and he could pass, but a the same time he had that passion, he could tackle."

Oxlade-Chamberlain spent six years at Arsenal having started his career at Southampton.

But he struggled to hold down a regular place in Arsene Wenger's side and was tried in a number of different positions.

And he added: "The idea of playing centrally is definitely something I like. When I got that opportunity at Arsenal I enjoyed it. I liked having more of the ball.

"The main reason I came here was the understanding I;d be playing further up the pitch and in a more attacking role."
