With the transfer window just days from shutting, football fans in Birmingham thought they spotted an unexpected arrival hovering towards St Andrews stadium.

Bizarre footage captured on Tuesday before the Blues League Cup clash at home to Bournemouth appeared to show a mystery object circling near the Gil Merrick stand, the Birmingham Mail reported.

The 30-second clip was posted to YouTube on Wednesday by an account named Premier League Gaming in which it was described as a UFO.

But one person suggested the object was in fact a drone.

They wrote: "If it was loud it was a drone. if it was silent it might have been a UFO."

Harry Redknapp's team were dumped from the second round of the Carabao Cup, known as the League Cup, after Premier League Bournemouth defeated them 2-1.

The spooky footage was reminiscent of when a suspected UFO was seen flying over Geneva stadium in October last year.

Hundreds of people watched as a disc-shaped object with three lights hovered over the Swiss city's stadium.

Dozens of people took to social media to report the sighting with pictures and video.

The "UFO" was said to have made a "shrill noise" as it appeared over the stadium for around 20 seconds before it disappeared.

Among the witnesses was Swiss international footballer Matias Vitkieviez who posted a video on Facebook with the caption: "Everyone sees the same thing as me? It’s completely crazy! UFO above the industrial area behind the stage of la praille #ufogva"
