Henrikh Mkhitaryan has sent a message to Jose Mourinho on Twitter as he continues to be left out of Manchester United’s starting XI.

The 28-year-old midfielder had a barnstorming start to the season, registering five assists in his opening three Premier League games, but has struggled for form in recent weeks.

Mkhitaryan’s last start for the Red Devils came in the side’s 1-0 defeat at Chelsea on November 5, but the Armenian appears to be ‘working hard’ to get back in first-team Mourinho’s plans.

Ahead of United’s clash with Southampton at Old Trafford, he posted a picture of himself in training with the caption ‘#workhard’.

Mkhitaryan’s omission from Mourinho’s starting line-ups has seen him linked with a return to his former club Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told Bild: ‘I know the economic details of his transfer to Man United like nobody else.

‘That’s why [his return] is only conceivable with a great deal of imagination.’

Reports suggest Mkhitaryan was involved in a bust-up with Mourinho at United’s training ground after an analysis session highlighted a defensive mistake.

It’s understood Mourinho criticised the midfielder for a error he made in the side’s 1-0 victory over Brighton at Old Trafford.
