Jose Mourinho has praised Jesse Lingard’s recovery after the winger scored twice to salvage a draw in Manchester United’s clash with Burnley on Boxing Day.

United were two goals down to Sean Dyche’s side by half-time and faced the prospect of falling even further behind Manchester City, who travel to Newcastle United on Wednesday evening.

Lingard was brought on as a half-time substitute and made a significant impact as his double rescued a point for United.

Mourinho’s men were looking to bounce back from their 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Saturday, and Lingard was heavily criticised after missing an open goal in that match.

And it appears Mourinho has not forgotten about that chance against Leicester, which if it had been taken, would have put United 3-1 ahead.

‘I think it’s good for him after the feeling of that missed chance against Leicester, with an open goal,’ Mourinho told MUTV after the 2-2 draw with Burnley.

‘Where for sure he has a feeling of an easy chance, 3-1, game over. I think it’s a great feeling for the kid, because he’s a great kid.’
