Ashley Young stunned his former club Watford with a remarkable free-kick effort from distance as Manchester United secured a 4-2 win away from home.

But if Victor Lindelof had his way, the England international wouldn’t have even taken it!

Jose Mourinho had already admitted his surprise that Paul Pogba gave Young ‘permission’ to take on the strike from a long way out, and Lindelof has now revealed he threw his name in the hat to have a dig.

With Young belting it past Heurelho Gomes, Lindelof obviously holds no grudges and was full of praise for his team-mate on social media.

‘I asked @youngy_18 if I could take the free kick,’ the Swedish centre-back said on Instagram. ‘He said: I got this one Vic.

‘He sure did! Well done my friend, that was something else?

‘3 more points back to Manchester after a tough away game?’

While Lindelof wasn’t given the opportunity to shine from a dead ball situation, his manager was seriously impressed with the centre-back’s performance.

‘I think Richarlison is a very good player and a difficult player to play against,’ Mourinho said following United’s win.

‘But Victor is very fast and he’s adapted to play centrally but also to go to the sides because he’s got the agility that many of the central defenders don’t have.

‘I think it was another very positive performance by Victor.’
