Jose Mourinho has explained his shushing gesture immediately after Manchester United’s 1-0 victory Tottenham.

Anthony Martial started on the bench at Old Trafford but replaced Marcus Rashford in the 70th minute and scored the winner just 11 minutes later with a calm finish past Hugo Lloris.

Mourinho was hit with a wave of criticism following United’s goalless draw at Anfield and used the defeat of Spurs to send a message to his doubters, making Mauricio Pochettino wait for his handshake.

Asked about the gesture after United’s win, Mourinho said: ‘Some people speak too much, calm down, relax a little bit.

‘Don’t speak too much, speak, speak, speak, relax. Relax a little bit, don’t be so nervous. Don’t be so excited.’

Some believed the gesture may have been aimed at Pochettino and his coaching staff at Old Trafford.

However, when asked if it was aimed at the opposition bench, Mourinho replied: ‘No. The opposition bench did their job, super correct.

‘Has yet to arrive the match where myself, Mauricio, my staff and his staff have no problem, we played against each other so many times since Spain.

‘We have a really good relation, we lost, we win, I don’t know if we draw also, and we are always correct with each other.

‘And once more I’m even happier because we beat a very good team. I like the team very, very much.’
