Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera says he doesn’t mind too much about losing his place to Nemanja Matic this season because of his team-mate’s quality in that role.

The Spain international has struggled to see as much playing time this season as last, having been one of United’s top performers during the 2016/17 campaign.

Jose Mourinho spent £40million to poach former club Chelsea for Matic in the summer, clearly feeling he could still do with more options in that defensive midfield department.

Herrera still feels, however, that his chance will come this season and that he can only benefit from having a player like Matic to learn from and compete with in this United squad.

‘There will be a lot of games this season, so we will sometimes play with two and sometimes with three, so we have a lot of solutions,’ Herrera said.

‘Matic is a master, one of the best in the world in that position, and I think he is going to help us a lot.

‘With (Michael) Carrick and Matic I have two mentors that I can learn from.

‘I know I can play more forward than them, when we play with three, so I will be there for the manager whenever he needs me. Sometimes as number six, sometimes as number eight, sometimes No. 10.’

Matic’s superb form this season has helped United to a fine start, with the Red Devils looking stronger after landing both the Serbian and Romelu Lukaku in big-money deals over the summer.
