Graeme Souness believes Manchester United lack a real superstar.

The Red Devils have spent millions over the past few years but are still yet to land – or produce – a real top drawer player according to the Liverpool legend.

Among those brought into the club over the past couple of years are Paul Pogba, who was the world’s most expensive player after his arrival, £75million striker Romelu Lukaku and £40m midfielder Nemanja Matic.

Others at the club who might think themselves worthy of superstar status are David De Gea, Henrik Mkhitaryan, Juan Mata and Anthony Martial.

But none of them are at that level according to Sounness.

‘I think when you go through the names they don’t have the superstar,’ said Souness. ‘But they’ve got some fabulous players.’

Souness highlighted Manchester United’s ability to play the long ball, which some other title contenders might lack.

‘They can mix it up when one form of attack doesn’t work for them.

‘We can see them bring Fellaini on. I think that’s missing – I’m not suggesting you do that all the time in every game you play – but there’s an area for that. A lot of our football has become too much possession based and I think getting it forward quickly sometimes works.

‘I think United will challenge [for the title], but they might just be short when push comes to shove as I think the better teams might just be able to deal with them in terms of the football they’ve got and the direct threat they’ve got.

‘But I think they’ll come close [to winning the title].’
