Arsene Wenger singled out club-record signing Alexandre Lacazette for praise after Arsenal’s narrow defeat to Sevilla in the Emirates Cup.

Lacazette, who cost the Gunners over £50million after joining from Lyon earlier in the window, was taken off at the Emirates after drawing the hosts level with a simple goal.

There were fears that the Frenchman has sustained an injury during the loss but Wenger insisted his substitution was not due to concerns over his fitness.

‘He was one of the few players who had a positive game today,’ Wenger said of Lacazette in his post-match press conference.

‘I took him off but not because he was injured, he got his goal and had an encouraging performance.’

‘He suffered a bit from the fact that we were a bit flat. When he was involved he was intelligent, he protects the ball well and he got his goal.

‘Week after week, he looks to adapt quickly. Overall I think it will take him one or two months. Scoring goals is about being in the right place and Lacazette has that quality.’
