Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola dodged questions over a January move for Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez, insisting he does not know what the club’s plans are for next month’s window.

City came close to securing Sanchez for £60million last summer only to see a deal collapse when Arsenal failed to secure Thomas Lemar as a replacement.

The Premier League leaders are expected to return for Sanchez either in January or at the end of the season, when his contract at Arsenal expires, and Guardiola rejected the opportunity to cool speculation over an imminent deal for Sanchez.

Asked directly whether City would make a January move for Sanchez, Guardiola said: “Good question!

“The transfer window is in winter time so I don't know. I don't know what we are going to do.”

Whether City do make a mid-season move they will find it difficult to convince Arsene Wenger to sanction a deal.

The Arsenal manager, who on Friday said “petrol” money had helped fire City to the top of the Premier League, insisted earlier this month that both Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, another star name out of contract in the summer, would not be sold “unless something unbelievable happens.”
