Matchday four of the 2017-18 Champions League season is now over, with Tottenham beating Real Madrid 3-1 at Wembley to reach the knockout stages.

A win for either side would have ensured qualification to the last-16, and it was Spurs who stunned the Champions League holders with a superb display on Wednesday night.

Dele Alli struck twice before Christian Eriksen added another to send Spurs fans into dreamland, with Cristiano Ronaldo only able to add a consolation goal for Zinedine Zidane's side.

Liverpool cruised past Maribor with a 3-0 Anfield win, while Manchester City beat Napoli 4-2 away to join Spurs in the knockout rounds.

Manchester United are on the brink of reaching the knock-out phase after teenage Benfica goalkeeper Mile Svilar unwittingly put Jose Mourinho's men on course for another narrow win.

A fortnight ago the 18-year-old became the youngest goalkeeper to ever play in the competition - a historic night that ended in embarrassment after he misread a Marcus Rashford free-kick and carried it over the line.

This looked to be a far better night for Svilar after he saved Anthony Martial's early penalty, but misfortune struck the Benfica goalkeeper once again as Nemanja Matic's shot came back off the post and deflected in off him to set United on course for a 2-0 win wrapped up by Daley Blind.

It leaves United six points clear at the top of Group A, ahead of Basel and CSKA Moscow, who came from behind to win in Switzerland.

Basel looked on course to clinch their place in the last-16 when Luca Zuffi put them in front but second-half goals from Alan Dzagoev and Pontus Wernbloom kept the Russians in the mix.

Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are both through to the knockout stages after winning their Group B matches on Tuesday.

PSG were comprehensive 5-0 winners at home against Anderlecht, while Bayern beat Celtic 2-1 in Glasgow. The French club have won their opening four group games for the first time since their debut season in the competition in 1994-95, when they won all six matches.

Marco Verratti got the ball rolling when he curled in a deserved opener and Neymar crashed in a 25-yard shot to extend the lead just before half-time. Layvin Kurzawa then scored an unlikely second-half hat-trick as PSG remained three points ahead of Bayern.

The German champions, without the injured Robert Lewandowski, are also through after having to work hard for their victory. A mistake from Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon presented Kingsley Coman the opening goal but Brendan Rodgers' side dominated much of the first half.

Callum McGregor scored a deserved equaliser but Javi Martinez headed home just three minutes later to seal the points and qualification for Bayern, although Celtic remain in pole position to finish third and go into the Europa League.

Chelsea crumbled as Roma moved to the top of Group C with a 3-0 victory at Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday.

Stephan El Shaarawy scored after 38 seconds and pounced on an Antonio Rudiger error to make it 2-0 after 36 minutes. Diego Perotti struck a fine third after 63 minutes and there would be no Chelsea comeback this time as Roma moved on to eight points, one more than the Blues.

Atletico Madrid's struggles in the group continued after they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Qarabag, who took the lead through Miguel Michel.

However, a superb strike from Thomas brought the hosts level. Pedro Henrique was sent off but Atletico could not take advantage and also finished with 10 men after Stefan Savic saw red four minutes from time.

Barcelona stay top of Group D despite a goalless draw at Olympiakos, but neither Juventus or Sporting Lisbon could take full advantages after they drew 1-1 in Portugal.

Bruno Cesar put the hosts in front but Gonzalo Higuain equalised after 78 minutes and Juventus remain three points behind the Catalans.

Liverpool completed a memorable night for Premier League clubs by beating Maribor 3-0 at Anfield to go top of Group E.

Roberto Firmino's first-half header was pushed on to the crossbar by Maribor goalkeeper Jasmin Handanovic, but Mohamed Salah made the breakthrough for Liverpool early in the second period.

James Milner's penalty was then brilliantly saved by Handanovic, after Aleksandar Rajcevic's foul on Firmino, before Emre Can fired home Liverpool's second and Daniel Sturridge added a late third.

Overnight group leaders Spartak Moscow slipped to third after going down 2-1 at Sevilla, who are a point behind Jurgen Klopp's side with two games to play.

Goals from Clement Lenglet and Ever Banega put the Spaniards 2-0 up just before the hour mark before substitute Ze Luis pulled one back for Spartak.

Manchester City have also qualified for the knockout stages as Sergio Aguero set a new club goalscoring record in a 4-2 win away to Napoli.

Nicolas Otamendi's header cancelled out Lorenzo Insigne's opener before John Stones' first-half header hit the crossbar.

Stones then conceded a penalty for his foul on Raul Albiol and Jorginho duly converted, but City struck back again to go 3-2 up through Aguero, whose 178th goal for the club broke Eric Brooks' 78-year record.

Raheem Sterling added City's fourth in stoppage time as Pep Guardiola's side extended their 100 per cent record in Group F to four matches.

Shakhtar Donetsk are all but guaranteed second place and progress to the last 16 after a 3-1 home win against bottom side Feyenoord.

Feyenoord took an early lead through Nicolai Jorgensen's header, but Shakhtar hit back through Facundo Ferreyra and two goals from Marlos.

Besiktas must wait before they can guarantee themselves a knockout place for the first time, but remain top of Group G after drawing 1-1 with last season's semi-finalists Monaco in Istanbul.

Rony Lopes' curling effort for Monaco on the stroke of half-time was cancelled out by Cenk Tosun's penalty after Jorge's foul on Ricardo Quaresma.

And Porto delayed Besiktas' qualification by beating RB Leipzig 3-1 at home to climb into second place in Group G.

Hector Herrera gave Porto a half-time lead and although Timo Werner hauled Leipzig level, goals from Danilo and Maxi Pereira secured them their second group win.

Dele Alli fired a double as Tottenham beat holders Real Madrid 3-1 to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages.

Alli's close-range effort separated the two sides at half-time and the England international made it 2-0 with a shot that took a big deflection off Sergio Ramos.

Harry Kane set up Christian Eriksen for Tottenham's third with 25 minutes left and although Cristiano Ronaldo pulled one back for the defending champions, their first Wembley appearance ended in defeat.

Tottenham head the Group H table by three points from Zinedine Zidane's side, who remain second and although yet to qualify, they are five points better off than group rivals Borussia Dortmund and Apoel Nicosia, who drew 1-1 in Germany.

Mickael Pote equalised for Apoel early in the second half after Dortmund had led at the break through Raphael Guerreiro.
