Roy Hodgson: Wilfried Zaha's return was not the only reason why Crystal Palace beat Chelsea

Roy Hodgson has admitted he will not celebrate Crystal Palace's 2-1 victory over Chelsea as the Eagles boss insisted the result was down to team work - and not just the return of Wilfried Zaha.

The Eagles came into their London derby clash without a win and, indeed, without a league goal this season but still stunned the Premier League champions with a hardfought victory.

Zaha proved key to the end result as the winger returned from nearly two months out with a knee injury to score the winner on the stroke of half-time while generally impressing with his workrate and intensity.

But Hodgson insisted after the game that the win was down to his entire team performing their duties well as the Palace boss admitted he will not celebrate the victory.

When asked about Zaha, Hodgson replied: "I'm a bit disappointed that's the way you're deciding to go. I thought he was excellent, don't get me wrong, but it was a good team performance.

"It's a bit unfair that a performance, of which we're really proud, to suggest that it's down to one good player returning. Our defending was excellent from the first to the last, our midfield passing was very good, and the two front players – running with the ball and beating people, and running behind people - were excellent.

"We had much more of a goal threat today. But I'm not putting my name to the fact that the reason we beat the champions of England is down to Wilf Zaha."

When then asked about the way he might choose to celebrate the result, Hodgson replied: "You forget how stressful those last minutes of a football match are.

"It's quite nice to be sitting here relaxed knowing nothing can happen, and that Chelsea can't score now. It's a nice feeling.

"That feeling is enough for me. I don't feel the need to celebrate as such. I have to stop myself being concerned more about what's coming."

He added: "I'm off to Southampton to watch Newcastle tomorrow, so my wife, who is accompanying me, can't say I don't give her a day out!"
