Patrice Evra signs for West Ham as former Manchester United defender returns to Premier League

West Ham have completed the signing of free agent Patrice Evra.

The former Manchester United, Juventus and Marseille full-back has signed a contract at the London Stadium until the end of the season and will provide depth to a West Ham squad increasingly light on numbers amid a string of injuries and disciplinary issues.

Evra, 36, had been handed a season-long ban by Uefa from European competitions after aiming a kick at a Marseille fan during a Europa League game in November. He is, however, free to play in the Premier League.

Arthur Masuaku’s six-game ban, of which two matches have been served, left West Ham with Aaron Cresswell as their only available senior left-back and the England international has often been deployed as a central defender in a three-man back-line.

Evra has won eight domestic titles with Juventus and Manchester United, winning the 2008 Champions League with the latter.

He will wear the No.27 shirt last worn by his former Marseille team-mate Dimitri Payet.
