Doncaster Rovers manager Darren Ferguson has turned to his father Sir Alex Ferguson for advice on how to get on over on Arsene Wenger as he prepares for Wednesday’s EFL Cup tie at Arsenal.

Sir Alex Ferguson endured a healthy rivalry with Wenger after the latter’s arrival in the Premier League in 1996 and though the animosity between the two of them eventually transformed into admiration few have been able to mastermind victory over Arsenal quite like the former Manchester United manager.

It would take a remarkable achievement for Doncaster to beat even a weakened Arsenal side at the Emirates, particularly after a run of six league games without a win that has left them hovering above the League One drop zone on goal difference.

But Darren Ferguson hopes the counsel of his father might give him an edge as he plots what would be a remarkable shock.

“I speak to him at length but obviously [for] this game,” Darren Ferguson said. “He's going to be there, my mother is going to be there and my family so it's good, good for everyone.

“All the lads' families will be there but, like I say, it's important we go there and put on a performance.”
