FA reveals 'aggressive' Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger called referee Mike Dean 'a disgrace' and 'not honest'

Arsene Wenger labelled referee Mike Dean a "disgrace" following Arsenal's draw with West Brom to earn himself a touchline ban, the Football Association has revealed.

The FA released a written report on Tuesday to explain why they handed the Arsenal manager a three-game touchline ban, which he has now served.

The report reveals the scathing comments Wenger used toward Dean in the match officials' changing room at The Hawthorns after West Brom were handed a late penalty to draw 1-1 against Arsenal on New Year's Eve.

Arsenal were furious about Dean's decision to award a handball after Jay Rodriguez's cross struck Calum Chambers from close range.

In the FA's statement, Dean reported that as the referee's "entered the dressing room after the game Mr Wenger stood behind us in the doorway and told the West Brom steward to ‘let him in’.

"He was very aggressive leaning towards me, pointing aggressively at me saying ‘you’re not honest’ on numerous occasions.

"I replied ‘so you’re calling me a cheat’. He replied ‘I maintain what I say, you’re not honest’.

"He then said ‘you’ve done this to us many times before, you’re supposed to be professional, you’re a disgrace’.

"He was then ushered out of the room by the West Brom safety officer'."

Wenger was subsequently charged with misconduct, fined £40,000 and then handed a three-game touchline ban.

He watched Arsenal's next three games against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup, against Chelsea in the EFL Cup and, on Sunday, against Bournemouth in the Premier League from the stands.

Arsenal did not win any of those matches.

The FA also revealed in their report that the Regulatory Commission, who discussed Wenger's case, considered imposing a stadium ban but "agreed it was not warranted in this case."

"However, in the event of a further incident of this nature, it is expected that a Regulatory Commission would consider this," the report added.

Wenger has also been formally warned about the comments he made before and after Arsenal played Chelsea in the Premier League and EFL Cup this month.

Following Arsenal's 2-2 Premier League draw against Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on 3 January - a game in which Eden Hazard won a debatable penalty - Wenger suggested there was a conspiracy against the Gunners.

He said: "We got again a farcical decision on a penalty but we knew that before so we have to deal with that."

When asked what he meant when he said he knew Arsenal would suffer a "farcical decision", Wenger added: "I mean nothing.

"You are always more intelligent than everybody so you can guess what happens."

He later said he would not retract what he said about the penalty decision.
