Toby Alderweireld insists Tottenham should not be 'satisfied' with second place in the Premier League table

Toby Alderweireld insists Tottenham should not be "satisfied" with climbing to second place in the Premier League table.

Mauricio Pochettino's side were as low as fifth place in the early stages of December following a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United.

But Spurs have clawed their way back into the title race courtesy of a club record six consecutive Premier League victories.

The north Londoners are now just seven points adrift of leaders Chelsea but Alderweireld is adamant the club should not be content with their current position, despite an impressive upturn in form.

“I think it’s very good but you have to keep going and not be satisfied with what you have," he told Tottenham's official website.

"Just keep going, work hard and try to win every game as it comes, then see it game-by-game.

"The next game [Manchester City] is a big one. It’s a cliché because you want to win every game, but these are the big games and that’s why you want to play at the top in the league."

Spurs travel to the Etihad Stadium this afternoon in confident mood and the onus will be on Pep Guardiola's side to deliver.

City have slipped to fifth place in the table, having won just one of their last three games, but Alderweireld remains wary of the home side's attacking threat, which could include new signing Gabriel Jesus.

"We have to be on top as a defence and as a team. We have to be very good to stop them but I think we have to play them as a team.

"We know our quality is the team so I’m confident we can beat them," insisted the Belgian.

Spurs boast the best defensive record in the division, having conceded just 14 goals this season, including nine away from home.
