Manchester United transfer news: Reds poised to break bank with swoops for Schweinsteiger and Cavani

Bayern Munich have told German World Cup winner Schweinsteiger that he can decide on his future.

United manager Louis van Gaal is determined to be reunited with the player who he converted from a winger into a central midfielder during his time in charge at Bayern.

"If Schweinsteiger wants to stay here then that's perfect. He's a top player," said Bayern boss Pep Guardiola yesterday. "While I am planning to work with Basti next season, Basti is the one who has to decide.

"He must decide what he does alone. I told him, the future depends on you."

Schweinsteiger has spent his entire career with the German champions, winning eight Bundesliga titles, but fell out of favour last season and is open to the idea of a move to United.

So too is Paris Saint Germain striker Cavani - the Uruguayan would be part of a swap deal with Angel di Maria if United can strike an agreement with the Paris club.

Meanwhile, United goalkeeper David de Gea flew into Madrid yesterday, apparently for a holiday, as speculation about his future, and potential transfer to Real Madrid intensifies.

Elsewhere, Ipswich Town rejected a £4.5m offer from Middlesbrough for Ireland striker Daryl Murphy.

"I don't want to sell Daryl," said Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy. "He was the top striker in the Championship last season and he would not be easy to replace."

In other news, Ireland defender Paul McShane completed his move to Reading from Hull City.

"There were a lot of surprised people," said McShane. "But I could see it coming. That's football for you. There is no romance left in the game. I do feel a bit left down. I had to fly to Cork after the league ended so it was done by phone."
