It was a painful Saturday night for Republic of Ireland winger James McClean as his West Bromwich Albion side lost 2-1 against Liverpool at Anfield - with his discomfort all the more acute after a nasty leg injury.

McClean posted a picture of his injury on his Instagram account and as you might expect from this outspoken sportsman, the image came with a punchline.

The winger, who deleted his Twitter account after constantly getting into trouble for entering into social media wars with his detractors, is now using Instagram instead and he offered up this message next to the picture of his nasty injury: "If it was vice versa ".

It was a hint that he felt the punishment from the match officials would have been very different if it was his challenge that had inflicted this kind of injury on a Liverpool player, with this image enough to make anyone wince.

McClean left the field after 65 minutes with blood visible on his sock following the clash and while it appears to be a nasty injury, it is unlikely to keep him out of the game for too long.

However, it may be worth watching McClean's next game against Liverpool to see if he targets any of Jurgen Klopp's men for a touch of revenge....Roy Keane style.
