Roy Keane predicts Manchester United are ready to challenge for Champions League glory this season
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane believes manager Jose Mourinho is laying the foundations to win trophies at the club this season, despite persistent criticism of what are perceived to be the negative tactics he is deploying.
Keane has been an outspoken critic of Mourinho in recent years, with his condemnation of the United boss especially vocal at times during his first season at the club.
Yet despite suggestions that United are not playing with the kind of swagger you would expect from the Old Trafford giants, Keane appears to be impressed with Mourinho's efforts as he reflected in their 1-0 Champions League win against Benfica in the Champions League in his role as an ITV pundit.
The Republic of Ireland assistant manager believes Mourinho will be pleased to see Manchester City claiming all the plaudits after their sparkling start to the season, with United showing solid form both domestically and in the Champions League.
"It will suit the United camp at the moment to let City get all the credit at the moment," declared Keane. "United are in a sense under the radar, but they are getting results and clean sheets. That gives you the foundations to get trophies."
Keane also showed his compassionate side, as he praised United striker Romelu Lukaku and his United team-mates after they consoled young Benfica keeper Mile Svilar after his mistake handed United a victory in a disappointing game in Lisbon.
"Your heart goes out to the young goal keeper," stated Keane, whose jeans and jumper appearance led some to suggest on Twitter that he had forgotten the clothes he was meant to be wearing for his latest TV appearance.
"All young keepers make mistakes and it is how they react that will decide what kind of future they will have. I feel sorry for him. It was really nice to see after the game, lovely touches from the United players. He is learning his trade and sometimes you have to learn the hard way by making mistakes."
