Manchester United have now equalled their best-ever top-flight unbeaten run as they stretched their streak to 24 games during the goalless derby draw with City.

Jose Mourinho’s side were made to hang on for the majority of the second half, especially for the last 10 minutes after Marouane Fellaini was sent off for a headbutt on Sergio Aguero.

Substitute Gabriel Jesus thought he had won the derby late on – and ended United’s unbeaten run in the process – but he was correctly flagged offside.

United’s run of 24 league games stretches all the way back to the 4-0 defeat to Chelsea in October at Stamford Bridge and equals the record set by Sir Alex Ferguson’s United in the 2010/11 season, when they won the Premier League.

During that run, they won 15 of their games with nine draws, compared to Mourinho’s side who have 13 victories and 11 draws.

However, Mourinho praised the ‘resilience’ of his players in what was one of the most testing moments of their unbeaten run as they were reduced to 10 men.

“Today we show exactly that (resilience) against a strong team, playing with 10 men without midfield players on the bench to make any kind of change,” he said.

“I played Fosu-Mensah in that extreme situation. The team is in trouble. The team has a lot of problems and to play a big derby like this one in the way we did shows resilience and big character from the players.”
