‘He showed his quality’ - Puel singles out Mahrez for praise after Leicester City’s victory

Claude Puel has lauded Riyad Mahrez’s ‘fantastic’ showing in their 3-0 victory over Huddersfield Town, stating the winger ‘showed his quality’.

The result saw the King Power Stadium outfit return to winning ways after a disastrous ending to December, where they got only a solitary point from the last four games of the year.

Mahrez set the Foxes up for victory after planting an emphatic volley past Jonas Lossl in the 53rd minute. The 26-year-old then set up Islam Slimani for a second before Marc Albrighton wrapped up their eighth win of the season in the closing stages.

“In the first half we played a team with a strong defensive unit who had quality on the pitch,” said Puel.

“They tried to play behind our defenders, it was tough to play against them. We started well with quality on the pitch. perhaps the last 15 minutes we struggled to find the solutions but in the second half we had the same positive attitude and we showed our quality.

“We scored through Riyad [Mahrez] and after that we had more space and we scored more. We put in a good performance today. It was a fantastic game for Riyad. It was fresh legs today with quality and more intensity, with and without the ball.

“He showed his quality. I like all the play of the team with quality. To play just two days after our game at Liverpool, with this quality and intensity was good. It was important against this team because they try to play good football. It is a good win today.”

The Algeria international has now been directly involved in 14 league goals [seven goals and seven assists] this season - which already bettered last term's feat of nine [six goals and three assists] - in 22 appearances.

Despite the win, Leicester City are unmoved from their eighth position, and they now boast of 30 points from 22 games.
