ITALY

Gianluigi Buffon

The Italy legend was put under limited pressure by England but, after blocking Wayne Rooney’s powerful second-half shot, was then powerless to prevent Andros Townsend’s equaliser.

Andrea Ranocchia

Was a danger to England from set-pieces with his aerial presence but also defensively sound. Made one excellent first-half block to deny Theo Walcott from the edge of the penalty area.

Leonardo Bonucci

Has an excellent understanding with Juventus team-mate Giorgio Chiellini and was rarely troubled even when England’s front three of Rooney, Harry Kane and Walcott tried to interchange positions.

Giorgio Chiellini

Made a firm early challenge on Kane to lay down something of a marker and then showed the skills of a winger to easily skip past Phil Jones and cross for Italy’s first.

Alessandro Florenzi

Gave Italy natural width in their 3-5-2 formation and was able to pin back Kieran Gibbs to ensure that England were forced to play narrowly and predictably through the centre of their midfield.

Marco Parolo

A dynamic and inventive presence as Italy generally controlled the central midfield. Forced an excellent first-half save from Joe Hart with a dipping shot from distance.

Mirko Valdifiori

Helped screen the Italy defence to reduce the impact of Rooney. Was initially excellent in possession to help his team initially dictate the tempo of the match but then faded.

Roberto Soriano

Emerging young Sampdoria midfielder whose technical quality was also impressive. Rarely lost the ball and was also clever at dropping into space to ensure Italy bypassed England’s diamond.

Matteo Darmian

Came close to scoring in the opening minutes when he surged clear of Nathaniel Clyne but showed a slight lack of confidence in then crossing rather than shooting himself

Eder

His finishing rarely convinced on what was his full debut but his willingness to drop deep caused England problems. Also played on after lading awkwardly following a clash of heads with Jones.

Graziano Pelle

Has been enduring a terrible goalscoring drought with Southampton but produced an excellent glancing header to put Italy into the lead before also missing an excellent second-half chance.

Subs: Antonio Conte made six changes in the last 30 minutes and his team lost much of their midfield rhythm and defensive balance. Luca Antonelli wasted one particularly inviting chance to put Italy back into the lead.

ENGLAND

Joe Hart

Made several important saves to keep England in the game on what his 50th cap. Tipped Parolo’s first-half shot over and then made an excellent block at the start of the second half to deny Eder

Nathaniel Clyne

Right-back remains a position of weakness for England and Clyne did little to advance his case. Fortunate not to be punished when he lost Darmian at the start of the game.

Chris Smalling

Had begun shakily like the rest of the England team and was then forced off through illness in the 44th minute after failing to pick up Pelle for Italy’s goal.

Phil Jagielka

England’s best defender but still not at the same level as Bonucchi or Chiellini. Made important first-half interception to deny Darmian and then again in the second-half to block Eder.

Kieran Gibbs

Generally sound defensively against Florenzi. Did also break forward to create one excellent second-half chance but shot weakly into the side-netting before providing the assist for Townsend’s goal.

Phil Jones

Asked to start in the holding midfield position but struggled badly, both with his positioning and wayward passing. Moved to centre-back but then beaten easily by Chiellini for the Italy goal.

Jordan Henderson

Has been growing in stature for club and country over recent months but the England midfielders were initially taught a lesson by Italy and he struggled to impose himself on the game.

Fabian Delph

Another whose use of the ball was horribly erratic. Misplaced passes in important areas and struggled to provide any service to England’s front three.

Wayne Rooney

Comfortably England’s best outfield player. Hit the bar with early shot into the ground, delivered a brilliant pass to create a chance for Walcott and forced excellent Buffon save.

Theo Walcott

Short of match fitness and it showed. His only half chance was blocked by Ranocchia and, although the service was almost non existent, he also struggled to find dangerous positions.

Harry Kane

Worked tirelessly and was involved in some of England’s best play. Had a shot deflected into the side netting and also created a good second-half chance for Rooney.

Subs: England improved hugely with all the second-half changes. Michael Carrick brought control in midfield, Ryan Mason and Ross Barkley were energetic while Andros Townsend finished superbly to salvage what had looked an unlikely draw.
