Watching their team crash out of the Champions League to Liverpool in the comprehensive manner Hoffenheim did will have left a bitter taste in their fans’ mouths.

Yet one travelling fan of the Bundesliga outfit was pictured literally washing his mouth out as he brushed his teeth in the stands on Wednesday.

The fan, who gave his name only as Sven S, has now explained the thinking behind his impromptu hygiene regime: He was getting rid of the taste our apparently substandard beer.

The mechanic from Cronheim told the German station Radio Regenbogen he’d felt the urge to freshen up shortly after arriving at Anfield.

He said: "I had to get rid of the bad beer taste After a 25-hour drive with the bus from Germany to Liverpool I simply needed to freshen my mouth.

"We had some English beer and then directly went to the stands."

When asked if his mother would be proud, he added: "Who would not be? Which mother has a son that shows the whole world that he brushes his teeth."

Hoffenheim exited the Champions League on Wednesday as Liverpool beat them 4-2 to go through to the group stage 6-3 on aggregate.
