Watford 3 Liverpool 3: Miguel Britos scrambles home controversial injury-time equaliser in six-goal thriller

Whatever it was the Premier League defenders were doing over the summer it was not improving their defending.

After Friday’s seven-goal opener to the season, came another six at Vicarage Road. And had Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini or Fabio Cannevaro been in  attendance as the self-proclaimed finest league in the world got under way, the great Italian defenders would have wondered what on earth had happened to the dark art of keeping a clean sheet.

For Liverpool, seemingly heading back north with three points banked from their first away encounter of the season, this was a particularly calamitous defensive performance.

The nadir came in the third minute of injury time. Watford, a goal down and time running out, won a corner  after Miguel Britos’s sharp shot had been saved by Simon Mignolet. Jose Holebas sent what looked to be a wasteful set-piece short into the Liverpool area. But as Giorginio Wijnaldum flailed at the ball, it fell into the path of Nordin Amrabat, who scooped it goalwards for Britos, apparently well offside, to bundle home.

Standing in his technical area Jurgen Klopp looked utterly crestfallen. His side had been undone by incompetence, snatching a draw from the teeth of victory. It might be a new season, but some things don’t change.

“We know we can do better. We have to do better,” said Klopp.

Mohamed Salah

The home supporters had warmed up for the match with a loud chorus of “Where is Coutinho?” But the absence of the transfer-seeking Brazilian, sidelined with a convenient back strain, could not be blamed for the calamitous way Liverpool started.

After all, the diminutive playmaker has never been the first line of protection at a corner. And here those charged with defending their line seemed to lose all sense of responsibility. After just nine minutes Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Roberto Firminho all appeared rooted to the turf as Stefano Okaka steamed in to head home.

In truth, the red defence was not isolated in its sluggishness. All round the pitch Liverpool began the game second to the ball, bullied by a Watford side epitomised by Italian striker Okaka.

Mohammed Salah, making his debut on the right of the Liverpool attack, found himself initially smothered by the foresquare Holebas. Tom Cleverley and Nathaniel Chalobah, the former loanees now making their first appearance together as full-time signings, were running the midfield for Watford. Liverpool looked under-cooked and under-whelming all over the pitch.

“I was not happy with the first half,” Klopp admitted. “It was very physical and Watford was too often the winner.”

Whatever Liverpool’s frailties, however, any side with Sadio Mane in it is always likely to have its moments. He scored a superb equaliser, exchanging a deft series of passes with Firminho before stealing into the Watford penalty area and steering the ball expertly past Heurelho Gomes.

But parity was not maintained for long. Five minutes later, Cleverley won the ball all too easily in midfield, strode forward and steered a bending cross into the Liverpool box. It might have been cleared, but it wasn’t. The ball fell to the excellent Abdoulaye Doucoure who stabbed it home.

Klopp must have worked furiously at half-time, applying an alarm clock to his dozing players. Because, aided by Watford being obliged to replace two players with injuries, as first Daryl Janmaat then Roberto Pereyra crumpled to the turf clutching their shins, within moments of the restart Liverpool were back in it. In a sequence of passing that might well become a staple of their tactical approach this season (especially if Coutinho does leave for Barcelona) Mane found Firminho who sent Salah tearing into the Watford box. Gomes seemed slow to note the danger. And by the time the goalkeeper arrived at the forward’s ankles the ball had gone and the forward was sent flying. A  penalty was rightly awarded which Firminho expertly converted.

No more than two minutes later,  Liverpool were in the lead. Lovren  released Firminho whose beautifully judged chip to the far post was perfectly guided into the net by Salah.

Klopp’s tactical approach of if you score two we’ll score three seemed to have achieved its aim. With Chalobah and Cleverley fading in their influence, Liverpool began to exercise in control. In the away stand the visiting fans were running through their songbook. But then, with seconds left, came the corner Klopp must have been dreading.

“When you analyse your opponents, you analyse the moments you can achieve something more,” said the Watford manager Marco Silva. “Every set-piece makes a difference.”

He was right there. And while aesthetics might have been challenged, while the equalising goal might have redefined the word scrappy, it was enough to spark wild celebrations among the Watford faithful. Relief can be an intoxicating brew.

For Klopp there was only disappointment. Plus the certainty that ahead of the Champions League qualifier on Tuesday, he will need to do some work on defending corners.

At the moment we have only one point,” he said. “I wait for the moment when I will feel better about that.”

FT Watford 3 Liverpool 3

Another helter-skelter match that will leave Liverpool fans frustrated. Are we already on our way to a record tally of opening weekend goals ?

Time on ball (at full time)

Average touch positions (full time)

Bizarre end to a bizarre game

Wijnaldum and Liverpool fail to clear corner. Britos keeps it in at an acute angle and hammers it towards goal. It bounces over the line in messy fashion and the goal is given. Need to see another replay to establish who got the final touch.

GOAL!

Miguel Britos pops up with a late equaliser for Watford - it's 3-3.

Good punch Mignolet

Mignolet did well to punch clear when the ball from the free-kick looped up in the air.

The Britos stings his palms with a speculative long-range effort.

92 minutes

Watford have a free-kick deep in Liverpool's half. Alexander-Arnold gave it away.

89 minutes

Watford's tactics now reduced to punting the ball towards Andre Gray and hoping for the best - but it might not be the worst idea given Liverpool's problems with long balls.

Five minutes added time.

87 minutes

Watford try and switch the ball to Amrabat but the ball skips out of play. Mignolet now taking as much times as possible over goal kicks and picks up a booking for his trouble.

85 minutes

James Milner ready to enter the fray for Liverpool. Salah sets Mane free down the left, who stands on the ball assessing his options and picks out Mane on the edge of the box. Ball was running across his body so it was difficult, but he should have done better than skew a side-footed effort wide.

83 minutes

What an odd player Emre Can is. Can look cumbersome, but sometimes sublime. Whips a magnificent pass over the top for Salah to chase, but Gomes just about gets there ahead of the winger.

80 minutes

Divock Origi on for Firmino in the closing stages. Watford's fine effort fizzling out rather now.

78 minutes

Yet another Watford player down with an injury problem, this time it's Kaboul who is down holding his hamstring.

The defender is getting his leg strapped up in a bid to carry on.

75 minutes

Troy Deeney watching on from the stands next to summer signing Will Hughes. Liverpool should have enough under the bonnet to get a fourth, but you can't be over confident about them not conceding again.

Time on ball (60 - 75 min)

73 minutes

Applause rings around Vicarage Road in honour of Graham Taylor.

Mignolet and Lovren get themselves in an almighty mess. Lovren decides not to head a chipped ball into the box, but Mignolet neither punches or catches but the ball does not break Watford's way. Scary stuff if you're a Liverpool fan.

71 minutes

Chalobah makes a bad decision to try and press Liverpool on his own, but they play around him and start another attack. Moreno gets his head up and plays a chipped pass over to Salah on the right, who lets the ball drop and fires a left-foot half volley over the crossbar.

68 minutes

Outstanding driving run by Emre Can starting with a deft first touch. Kaboul steams in and rugby tackles him to give Liverpool a free-kick.

65 minutes

Better from Watford as Gray gets in a footrace with Lovren. Last ditch defending by Liverpool but they scramble Amrabat's cross away. Positive start by Gray, though.

Holebas shows quick feet to wriggle out of the left-hand corner and win a free-kick with after a foul by Salah. Cleared by Liverpool.

63 minutes

Andre Gray replaces Okaka up front but Watford look all over the place at present: giving the ball away cheaply and offering Liverpool the counter-attacking chances they were not getting in the first half.

CLOSE! Liverpool almost score their fourth - Matip rising at the near post to meet Firmino's near-post corner but his glancing header strikes the bar.

60 minutes

Superb play by Alexander-Arnold and Salah, the right back very nearly feeding an inch perfect through ball to send the winger cleann through on goal. Was just a fraction too heavy.

Time on ball (45 - 60 min)

Dreadful defending by Watford

Lovren plays a simple ball over the top and nobody tracks Firmino. He lets the ball bounce before lofting it over Gomes' head. The ball may or may not have made it, but Salah was on hand to make sure - stabbing home from a few yards out.

GOAL!

A goal from Mohamed Salah for Liverpool makes the score 2-3.

The shot count is similar

Watford and Liverpool are evenly matched in attack so far - the vistors have fired in five shots to the hosts' four.

That is known in the trade as a stone-wall penalty

As soon as Salah got his left foot to the ball before the on-rushing Gomes it always looked like being a penalty. Roberto Firmino stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, sweeping into the left-hand corner.

Andre Gray ready to come on for Watford.

PENALTY! Liverpool

Clear penalty as Firmino gets there before Gomes who clatters hi.

53 minutes

Henderson drops between Liverpool's centre backs to try and get Liverpool playing. Amrabat plays a horrible blind pass inside his own half but Mane over hits his cross from the left.

52 minutes

Richarlison quite direct in his first few involvements, running at Alexander-Arnold and trying to feed Okaka.

49 minutes

Better from Liverpool as Salah digs a shot out from just inside the area that curls wide of the left-hand post. Pererya is going off and the exciting Brazilian talent Richarlison is on.

47 minutes

Pererya down for Watford. Klopp and Silva are having a frank exchange of views on the touchline.

We're off again

Second half under way. Wijnaldum was out early doing some stretches.

England hero Moeen Ali in attendance

Quite amazing there were three goals

HT: Watford 2 Liverpool 1

Aside from one brilliant piece of interplay for Mane's goal, Liverpool were pretty average there.

Time on ball (first half)

Average touch positions (half time)

45 minutes + 2

Alexandrer-Arnold whips in a lovely cross from deep on the right-wing and Kaboul heads away for a corner. Mane gets up on the six-yard-line to meet Firmino's inswinging corner but his glancing header bounces just wide of the far post.

Four minutes added time

Can Liverpool find an equaliser?

44 minutes

Mane, by far and away Liverpool's best player, gets down the left and whips and dangerous ball across the area but Kaboul clears.

42 minutes

Mignolet claims said corner, and tries to set Liverpool away on the break with an early throw but makes a complete mess of it. Watford just a few minutes away from taking a lead into half-time.

40 minutes

Okaka has done a sterling job of holding the ball up thus far. Holebas bustles forward down the left and wins Watford a corner.

37 minutes

WHAT A MISS! Salah pounces on a defensive mistake and streaks away in the inside right-channel. He is so one footed though, and rather than driving the ball across Gomes with his right he tries to lace the ball straight with his left and it flies over the bar,

35 minutes

This is marvelous entertainment again, though the more discerning watcher will be horrified by the defending. Watford test out Liverpool from a set piece again, but Kaboul's header is straight at Mignolet.

Another Premier League comedy unfolding

Before we had time to breathe, Watford are back in front. Doucoure nipped in to pinch a loose ball just outside the Liverpool area, and fed the overlapping Amrabat. His ball across the box ricocheted between Matip and Alexander-Arnold, presenting Doucoure with a tap-in from six yards out.

GOAL!

Watford are back in front again - Abdoulaye Doucouré makes it 2-1.

Time on ball (0 - 15 min)

First bit of good play by Liverpool

Famous last words there. Emre Can was the man who stepped up to open the door, playing Mane in with a delicious flick around the corner on the edge of the box. Mane took it in his stride, opened up his body and swept it right-footed into the far top corner.

GOAL!

1-1: Sadio Mané scores the leveller for Liverpool.

Liverpool respond

The visitors have their first shot of the game, in reply to two so far from Watford.

27 minutes

Liverpool shy of creativity thus far, which is not great surprise without Lallana and Coutinho. It's all well and good having speed merchants up front, but if you don't have the players to supply them it's an issue.

25 minutes

CLOSE! Almost a second for Watford. Liverpool loose in possession and Amrabat pounces in the inside-right channel. Clips a lovely ball behind Matip who has lost Okaka on his blindside, but Mignolet rushes out to smother.

22 minutes

Strong work from Wijnaldum in midfield, winning the ball back and releasing Salah but the Egyptian is a few yards offside. Not quite the usual vibrancy in Liverpool's play at the moment. Much of their game is about harrying teams into errors, but Watford have played it safe and not turned the ball over much in their own half.

20 minutes

The fact Mane is playing on the left means his runs are more in-to-out than out-to-in. At present, Watford are doing well to usher him down blind alleys.

Territory so far

16 minutes

Liverpool trying to muster a response, but Watford are defending deep and in numbers Very little space for Liverpool's speed on the break to exploit. Janmaat has had to limp off, and Femenia replaces him.

Time on ball (0 - 14 min)

13 minutes

Henderson looks to loft a ball into the left channel for Mane. Janmaat is a decent offensive full-back, but you sense that channel between the Dutchman and his centre back could be profitable for Liverpool.

Talk of the devil, Janmaat is down with a knock.

11 minutes

That should do wonders for Watford's confidence, who were truly rotten on occasion last season. Nice footwork from Chalobah just outside the area but not Watford player read his cute attempt at a through ball.

Carbon-copy of Vardy's second

Just like Arsenal, Liverpool mark zonally but they failed to block Okaka's run. The delivery from the corner was fantastic, flat and dipping onto the six yard-line. The big man was there to head home via Simon Mignolet's face.

GOAL!

Stefano Okaka strikes early to open the scoring - it's 1-0 to Watford.

7 minutes

CLOSE! Watford almost in front after great work from Okaka in midfield, driving at the Liverpool back four. He lays the ball to his left for Pererya to take on but his shot was deflected wide.

5 minutes

Watford's first foray forward, Janmaat pressing Mane into his own half and nicking the ball before swinging a dangerous cross over from the right. Lovren headed clear.

4 minutes

Mane wins a free-kick after a foul by Janmaat, and Mane is operating on the left flank with Salah on the right. That's the opposite side from last season where he was so devastating. Tries a one-two with Roberto Firmino, but Watford cut it out.

2 minutes

By the standards of last night's game, a serene start here at Vicarage Road. Both teams enjoying some time on the ball but no clear cut-chances so far. Already signs of Liverpool's trademark high-pressing.

We're off

Watford get us under way in the first game of this Premier League Saturday.

Players are on their way out

To the theme tune from Z Cars - which should be music to Liverpool's ears given their fine record at Goodison Park.

Kick-off less than 10 minutes away now

"I can't wait for football to be back, I've been craving football all summer."

A Watford fan speaks for the nation.

Jurgen Klopp speaks

We are prepared and that's all I need to know. It couldn't be more different between the pre-season games and the first Premier League.

We have to show up today.

Each team would miss Philippe Coutinho because he is a good player.

Chalobah

Ray Wilkins for one was outraged that Chelsea let Chalobah go on a permanent deal this summer, especially after letting Nemanja Matic go.

His could be a good outside bet to make Gareth Southgate's World Cup squad.

Liverpool arriving

Marco Silva

Sky Sport's Jamie Redknapp says Silva was 'fortunate' to get this job after taking Hull down last season, a sentiment that has been echoed by other pundits.

There are echoes of Roberto Martinez, who landed the Everton job after being relegated with Wigan Athetlic in 2013, though there was the small matter of winning the FA Cup.

Hull looked a better coached team after Silva arrived on Humberside, and Watford are banking on him to stabilise them in the top flight.

Moreno redemption

Alberto Moreno starts at left-back for the first time in 10 months. The Spaniard was a figure of fun this time last year, after his disastrous performance in the Europa League final against Sevilla and erratic display away at Arsenal on the opening day.

Debutants

Just the one debutant for Watford today, as Nathaniel Chalobah lines up alongside Tom Cleverley in central midfield.

Mohamed Salah takes his place in a tasty-looking Liverpool front three with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Hello and welcome...

Good morning and welcome to live coverage of Liverpool's opening Premier League game away at Watford, which has an awful lot to live up to after the Friday night escapades at the Emirates.

Liverpool's win at Vicarage Road courtesy of Emre Can's acrobatic goal-of-the-season contender was a crucial step on the path to Champions League football last season, and given the chatter around Anfield presently they would surely sign up for another 1-0 win.

Reports emerged yesterday that Philippe Coutinho formally asked to leave Liverpool and join Barcelona, who are looking to supplement their attack after the loss of Neymar.

Jurgen Klopp is insistent the Brazilian is not for sale at any price, and Liverpool's owners FSG doubled-down on the position with a public declaration that the player will stay. With Barcelona bidding in the region of £100m for the player however, the urge to sell and reinvest must be strong.
