Arsenal (3-4-3)
Petr Cech 7
Showed surprising speed in bursting off his line to thwart Batshuayi, although kicking was rusty at times. Could not do anything about the Chelsea goal.
Rob Holding 6
Assured in possession but guilty of switching off for the opener as Moses snuck in behind. It was not the first time he had been caught out.
Per Mertesacker 7
Kept Batshuayi firmly under control in the opening exchanges. Had to be replaced on 30 minutes after a bloody collision with Cahill’s elbow.
Nacho Monreal 8
Took a more central role in the back three after Mertesacker’s departure. Controlled the Arsenal defence and took his penalty well.
Hector Bellerin 7
Completely miscued a sliding challenge on Alonso, for which he was deservedly booked. Tidy on the ball, and provided some attacking verve down the right.
Mohamed Elneny 7
An energetic presence, although it was not the most cultured showing with the ball. Hustles and bustles and helped swing the game by drawing the red card.
Granit Xhaka 7
Could have scored the equaliser with a thunderous 30-yard effort, then went on to create it by picking out Kolasinac with a devilish delivery.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 7
Always looks less comfortable when stationed on the left but his direct running makes him a threat wherever he is on the pitch.
Alex Iwobi 8
Struck fear into Chelsea hearts with his rare ability to weave through tackles. It was a surprise to see him removed after 65 minutes.
Danny Welbeck 8
Looked sharp and strong. Was the first half’s best player as he rampaged through the Chelsea midfield, although he did dip after half time.
Alexandre Lacazette 6
Largely kept quiet by the formidable Chelsea back three. However, a curling effort that struck the post provided a glimpse of his class.
Subs
Kolasinac (Mertesacker 32) Fitted seamlessly into the defence and even bagged the equaliser with a well-directed header
Giroud (Lacazette 66)
Walcott (Iwobi 67)
Nelson (Welbeck 87)
Chelsea (3-4-3)
Thibaut Courtois 6
Stretched those long limbs to great effect in tipping away a rasping strike from Xhaka. Stepped forward to take a penalty but ballooned it well over the bar.
Cesar Azpilicueta 6
Cynically brought Welbeck down after being caught in possession. Otherwise untroubled and remains a steady and reliable performer on both the right and left.
David Luiz 7
Showed the old Brazilian flair has not been totally erased by Conte with a remarkable back-header to Courtois. Continues to be a commanding presence.
Gary Cahill 6
A typically combative showing, in which he injured Mertesacker, team-mate David Luiz and himself. An impressive block stopped Walcott from winning it at the death.
Victor Moses 7
Smartly-taken goal provided a sliver of vindication for his red card in the FA Cup final here in May. A willing runner as ever.
Cesc Fabregas 5
A largely peripheral figure who was well marshalled by Xhaka and Elneny. Could not quite find his range with his passing from deep.
N’Golo Kante 6
Scurried and snaffled his way around midfield as usual, but was let down by his distribution at times. Not at his all-conquering best.
Marcos Alonso 5
His withdrawal for Rudiger could perhaps be a sign of things to come this season. Spent much of the game chasing after Bellerin.
Willian 7
Will feel aggrieved to have been booked for diving, but will take solace in the fact that he was perhaps the most dangerous player in blue.
Pedro 6
Deserves credit for leading the Chelsea charge in the first half, but his red card for a studs-up challenge on Elneny allowed Arsenal back into this match.
Michy Batshuayi 5
Completely anonymous in the first half, and not much better in the second. Will surely be relegated to the bench by this time next week.
Subs
Morata (Batshuayi 73) Missing a penalty in the shootout will not go down as the ideal start to his Chelsea career
Rudiger (Alonso 79)
Musonda (Willian 82)
