Conte has made no secret of his previous attempts to sign Nainggolan, having initially failed to land him when he took charge of Chelsea in the summer of 2016.

The Blues boss showed no sign of ending his interest in the Belgium international in the run up to last night’s 3-3 Champions League draw against Roma - calling him “one of the best” in the world.

Nainggolan has always remained loyal to Roma when discussing his future, but after the game at Stamford Bridge he hinted at a future move to the Premier League.

On the possibility of play in England, he said: “Yeah, it’s a good league with beautiful stadiums, good atmospheres in the stadiums, but at the moment my head is only here [Roma].”

And when asked for his impressions of playing at Stamford Bridge, the 29-year-old midfielder added: “Yeah, good atmosphere.

“Thank you [to Conte] for the words, but at the end of the day we’re playing against each other and I have to do my job.

“I think he’s a really good coach because his results over the past few years speak for themselves.

“But in the end I have to do what I have to do, and that’s playing for Roma and giving the maximum for Roma."
