But for an Everton fan it’s one they won’t want to forget after ending their run of four defeats in a row and a 461 minute goal drought!

And it was Oumar Niasse, the striker they have shunned, who turned it all around once he’d come on instead of England’s record scorer and lifelong Toffees’ fan.

He struck twice in the last 13 minutes to lift his team out of the bottom three and the pressure off under fire Ronal Koeman.

The Senegalese has been a unmitigated flop since arriving on Merseyside in a £13.5 million deal more than 18 months ago.

He has started only two Premier League games and was shipped out on loan to Hull City last season where, at least, he showed glimpses of the form that won him his surprise move from Lokomotive Moscow.

Rooney had left the pitch with blood streaming from a nasty gash just above his left eye.

And his furious reaction to Simon Francis’ goalmouth challenge left absolutely no doubt that he believed he had been elbowed in the head.

He screamed at ref Martin Atkinson and spent five minutes on the touchline being patched up.

And even when he was subbed ten minutes into the second half he was still angrily complaining about the incident.

He made a point of stopping his walk off the field to challenge the linesman before Ronald Koeman pulled him away and directed him towards the tunnel.

Francis might have got away with it – play was allowed to carry on with Everton adamant there should have been a penalty and a red card – but the beaks are almost certain to want to take another look at it and if Rooney’s version is correct then they will have to take retrospective action against the Cherries’ skipper.

At least Niasse’s double left Toffees’ fans with something else to talk about other than Rooney’s pole-axing.

He came on with only 35 minutes left in a double substitution and Everton already behind from sloppy defending that saw Josh King fire through Ashley Williams’ legs to deceive the unsighted Jordan Pickford.

In their next attack, Jermain Defoe had an even better chances as he was left unmarked.

You’d have put your mortgage on him finishing off the move but his shot was too close to Pickford and he got his right boot on the ball to at least leave the Toffees with some hope.
