The 20-year-old, who featured during United’s pre-season tour of the US, found the back of the net from 20 yards to hand manager Ricky Sbragia a debut win.

Standing over the ball on the left side of the goal, Mitchell showed incredible technique to whip the ball up and over the wall before curling it home into the top corner.

Footage of the free-kick made its way online last night, spurring comparisons between the Manchester-born star and fellow free-kick specialist, Gareth Bale.

Bale first rose to notoriety with his deadly set pieces, rising through the ranks at Southampton from left-back before a big-money move to Spurs in 2007.

“Technique is exactly like Bale,” wrote one viewer.

“Maybe he’s our long-term left back solution.”

Another said: “That was a classy free kick, always rated him.”

Speaking to MUTV after the game, Mitchell claimed he wanted to set an example to the younger lads in the dressing room.

“Tour was really good, I learned a lot and it was a really good experience to be with the first-team,” he said.

“And now coming back [into the Reserves], I have to show leadership, because coming back into this team I’m one of the older ones rather than one of the younger ones.

The Reds were made to work hard for the three points against a physical Foxes team that included first-team centre back Robert Huth.

Huth, who missed Leicester’s dramatic 4-3 loss away at Arsenal, is currently recovering from an ankle injury that has seen him miss most of the pre-season campaign.
