Nemanja Matic has challenged Manchester United to build from the 4-0 win

Matic, snapped up from Chelsea for £40m, was in superb form in the middle of the park as the Red Devils kicked off their Premier League campaign with a swashbuckling 4-0 win against West Ham at Old Trafford.

Club-record signing Romelu Lukaku netted either side of the break before Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba added gloss to the score line at the death.

The win puts United top of the league table after one game and Matic was delighted to start with a bang.

“It was a really important game for us to start well with the three points,” the Serbian told Sky Sports.

“They were very compact but after the first goal we had more space.

“I am very happy for the team and we we will have more confidence going into the next game.

“The manager told me I have to do my job, Paul has to do his.

“I am very happy everyone gave their best against a good team.

“We have to continue to work like this.”
