Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho has been targeted by Barcelona

The Kop boss reiterated the club’s stance that the Brazil ace is not for sale as Barcelona ponder a second bid after having an initial offer of £72m rejected.

But while the Catalan giants continue to purse Coutinho, Klopp is confident he will have him as he revealed their ambition this year is to lift their first league title since 1990.

Liverpool finished fourth and a massive 17 points behind Chelsea.

But they were in the title race up until January before an ankle to Coutinho – which kept him out for a month - and Senegal star Sadio Mane’s absence at the turn of the year because of the Africa Cup of Nations caused them to stumble.

And Klopp is hoping for more luck as they look to end a 28-year wait for English football’s top prize.

“We will be playing for the championship, that’s what we did last season when we finished fourth,” said Klopp ahead of tonight’s opening Audi Cup clash against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

“You don’t start a season without ambition. I think we have our goals and I think we have a good team now.

“We had a bit of bad luck last season too so hopefully that will change, and I think we have a strong team.

“Let's hope we do very well. We have to work very hard to achieve what we want and we are doing that.”

While Klopp believes his squad is strong, they have suffered blows in their plans to add more names.

The Reds have all but thrown in the towel on landing Red Bull Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita this summer and are planning to wait until 2018 after having two bids rejected by the Bundesliga club.

They are currently exploring other midfield options, but whether or not they will choose to sign a second choice remains to be seen.

Klopp also wants Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk but, despite the Dutchman refusing to play for the Saints, there has been no movement on that since Liverpool stepped back after being accused of tapping up the player earlier this summer.

The £37m addition of Mohamed Salah remains their only significant business, so keeping Coutinho is seen as even more crucial.

“Where is the interpretation if you say he's not available to be sold,” said an irritated Klopp when asked if Coutinho would stay at Anfield.

“The word 'not' means there is nothing to interpret. It is nothing new from our point of view.”

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has been ruled out of the Audi Cup pre-season tournament with Liverpool set to face either Napoli or Atletico Madrid tomorrow depending how they fare against Bayern tonight.

Gomez is struggling with a knee problem and could be facing a race to be fit for the Premier League opener against Watford on August 12.

Fellow defenders James Milner, Dejan Lovren and Nathaniel Clyne have also been struggling with niggles through pre-season meaning Klopp may be short on numbers with a Champions League play-off also around the corner.

It could also mean that teenager Trent Alexander-Arnold could start the new campaign at right-back.

“We have a few players who have knocks,” added Klopp.

“Not everyone has had their preparations yet. We will have a few little problems there.”
