Starsport revealed last week that Manchester United attempted to hijack the Blues' move for the Monaco star.

The Red Devils agreed a fee with the Ligue 1 champions for Bakayoko but Chelsea are set to win the race for the 22-year-old.

And according to the Independent, the France international never wanted to join United.

They say the midfielder had decided early on that he wanted to go to Stamford Bridge and had no interest in going elsewhere.

The Independent add that Bakayoko will complete his £39.7m deal to Chelsea tomorrow.

The Monaco man is expected to undergo his medical tomorrow afternoon and pen his contract within 24 hours.

Reports today suggested Chelsea boss Antonio Conte wants another midfielder after Bakayoko joins the Blues.

Conte wants Bakayoko, N'Golo Kante and another star in his midfield in west London.

Bakayoko could miss the start of the campaign and may not be fit until September.

He required routine knee surgery this summer to sort a niggling injury.
