And Jose Mourinho may be able to snap up the Croatia international for slightly less than first thought, Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol has claimed.

Serie A giants Inter are demanding that United shell out a mammoth £48m to sign Perisic this summer.

The Red Devils have been locked in negotiations with the Italian outfit for several weeks and it seems they have reached a breakthrough.

Solhekol says Mourinho and co should be able to secure Perisic’s signature with a £45m offer and the deal is nearing completion.

He told Sky Sports: “[United] are stepping up their efforts to sign Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan.

"A deal is getting closer even though Inter have stuck to their £48m asking price all along.

"Perisic is with the rest of the Inter squad at their training camp in the north of Italy. United trying to do a deal before Inter fly to China next week.

"United's last offer was £39m, they need to raise that to about £45m to get their man."

United have completed two major transfers so far this summer.

Mourinho’s side have signed Victor Lindelöf from Benfica for around £32m and Everton’s Romelu Lukaku for £90m.

As well as Perisic, the Old Trafford club are determined to sign a new defensive midfielder before the transfer window closes.

The Red Devils want either Tottenham’s Eric Dier or Nemanja Matic of Chelsea.
